Perfect Eyebrows

Hello gorgeous,

During my last Make-up class, it occurred to me that many people don't know how important eyebrows are in framing the face and the eyes.
Many people take shaping eyebrows into their own hands and that's when the HORROR begins!!!
I am not kidding, very few people really know how to properly shape their brows, and need serious make-overs.
If you fall in one of these categories, leave your brows alone until they grow back to their original length and shape (I know it's "painful" to go around with un-kept brows, but it's a necessary step to fix the problem). Next, follow the "fix it" steps below.
NOTE: Stop the "bad" shaping as soon as possible; brows are among the few of our body hair than if removed long enough, it will stop growing!
And if you think any of these looks are ok, ask yourself a simple question: "which classy lady, or celebrity or beauty queen have I ever seen with THIS look?"
Trust me, they are not pretty, and if anyone tells you otherwise, they are either lying or trying to sell you the service (like tattoos)!
Remember fashion dictates brow shapes too, the 1970s had super thin brows in fashion, while the 1980s had the Brooke Shield's thick unkempt brows! I suggest you stick with the shape that suits your face the most, or follow fashion without changing your shape permanently.

Let's discuss the first NO-NO in eyebrow shaping:

Shaving eyebrows and drawing them in! The horror!!!

FIX IT: If you are among the fortunate ones who have big bushy eyebrows, figure out your most flattering shape first and draw it on the eyebrows with a white eye pencil; brush hair up (on the first inner half of the brows) and brush down (on the second outer half), then cut (Not shave) the excess length; after, with tweezers (or wax) remove the hair outside the shape you drew. It is important to draw the brow shape first, if we start tweezing without a shape, we risk to take too much off or have un-even eyebrows, making one too thin or too short.

Very small brows or lighter hair brows get Tattooed in! I am a fan of body tattooes but tattooed make-up is just AWFUL!!

FIX IT: Tattooed brows are usually tattooed in black ink, which with time will turn blue! The eyebrows are usually tattooed too strong and too angular...in short, they look like a cartoon drawing and un-natural! Unfortunately if you have already tattooed your brows, since it's a permanent decision, there is not much you can do to remove it! however, going over the shape with a brown eyeshadow and an angle brush, you can soften the look and make it more "natural".
If you haven't tattooed them yet, but want to fix a small or light eyebrow, you can fill it in with eyeshadow powder and achieve your favorite shape. The great thing about filling in eyebrows with make-up is that you can try different shapes or thickness and if you don't like it, you can wash it off!!
Black eyebrows should be colored with a brown eyeshadow and blond eyebrows with a green-grey eyeshadow (Sage or Safari, are some of the common names for these eyeshadows).
If the hair is too light and you want a more semi-permanent solution, you can color your hair with eyebrow dyes, which is a service most aestheticians perform in 10 min. or less!

Tadpole or Comma eyebrows are very common shapes. I find most people with bad brows fall in this category, and it's very common among young people. The problem is that people take too much off the entire length of the eyebrow, leaving a "ball" of hair close to the inner corner of the eyes.

FIX IT: Let your hair grow back first, then with a white eye pencil draw two parallel lines up to the point of the arch, and down towards the temples, slowly tapering into a point. When you are happy with the shape, take off with tweezers or wax strips the excess hair at the top and bottom of the brows. Follow the diagram to figure out where to start the brow, how long it should be and where to place the arch (the highest point of the eyebrow). Remember, if some hair within the desired shape is too long, don't pull it, just brush it up and then cut off the excess.

Another word of caution: when deciding how angled the eyebrows should be, keep in mind your face shape. If you have strong jaw lines and a square face shape, keep the arch low, almost circular (the opposite of your face shape). If the face is round, keep the angle high and more defined. Keep in mind the eye closeness as well. Close set eyes look better with eyebrows that start further apart, while wide set eyes look better with brows who are closer together.

Draw on different shapes before you decide which shape would look better, or visit a high quality aesthetician to help you decide...then keep up the shape.

Please, don't feel insulted by my comments, we have all been there! Eyebrow shapes are the hardest beauty step to figure out at first but make a huge difference in a look...as a matter of fact, go check out "before they were famous" celebrities pictures and the "after" looks, you can tell what a huge impact eyebrows have in their current looks.

Hey beautiful girls,
ok I know my blog title gives away what I am going to write about...but lately I have been obsessed with a tremendous product, which surprisingly is available at any Drug store and at a reasonable price. You all have seen Taylor Swift twirl around in the new CoverGirl commercials promoting the new CG line, well let me tell you...Bravo CoverGirl!! The new NatureLuxe line is fantastic!
I am especially obsessed with one of their products: the NatureLuxe Gloss Balm!

Typically, when you hear of a “gloss” or a “balm” we assume it also be synonymous with “colorless”. Even if bright in the tube, once the product makes its way onto the lips, it becomes bland and a great disappointment.

Not so much with these new Gloss Balm sticks from CoverGirl.

Not only is it formulated with all natural ingredients, has SPF 15 and smells wonderful, but the color payoff is extraordinary!

I gave away a whole bunch to my family and friends, used them on photoshoot and for Brides (I let them keep it for make-up retouching), great for teenagers for back to school and for the busy mom on the run...actually, I use mine everyday!!

You need to get one to believe me...you'll quickly become a fan as well!

Beauty Emergencies!!!

As easy as it is making up a beautiful skin or setting perfect hair, we all live in the real world and we all have to deal with beauty emergencies.

I have often been asked how I handle these difficult situations, so here are my little secrets!!

*Beauty Emergency: A giant red zit

How do zits know we have a special occasion coming up...or that oh so exciting date? Unfortunately zits happen! So how do we take care of them?

Fix: it’s important to first minimize the redness of the pimple. I find that an anti-inflammatory eye drop (like "Visine") helps to tame the redness. Then dab on a spot treatment and gently rub it in (if it contains Benzoyl Peroxide, it can zap a zit fast).

Put on your foundation as usual first...don't do it after or you will "disturb" the next make-up step.

To cover up- Use a dab a tiny bit of green concealer on the redness (green neutralizes red); Next, dot a little concealer onto the pimple and pat it with your finger until it sinks in, the trick is to use a concealer the same color as your skin -NOT lighter, or you'll put a big Ol' spotlight on the zit! Do another thin layer if you need to, and then set with powder.

*Beauty Emergency: Creasy eye shadow

You just spent a great deal of time to create a killer smoky eye...you blended and blended (like gurus told you in the youtube video) and then when you go check the mirror in the middle of the night, something has gone terribly wrong!! Prevention is the key in this case!!!

Fix: To avoid a smeary scene next time, prep your lids with foundation and a little powder or use an eye shadow primer. If you create the shadow effect with a creamy product (eye pencils, gel liners, cream shadows), remember you have to SET the makeup with a powder...I usually use the same color eyeshadow powder and it will give it enormous staying powder. Greasy lids can be fixed in a pinch too though, use a blotting sheet or 1 ply of toilet paper to absorb the excess oil, (let it sit on the lid for a few seconds, and remove it) then gently get rid of the crease with your ring finger (always pat, don't smear!!) and add some face powder to re-set.

*Beauty Emergency: Dark circles

Almost every woman I meet complains of dark circles, yes, even models!

The problem could be caused by many factors, lack of sleep, poor circulation, smoking, genetics etc. however the fix is quick and not hard.

Fix: First find a good concealer -make sure it has the same ingredients as your foundation: water based with water based, oil based with oil based etc. or they "won't play nice together!!"

I usually don't go too light...1 to 2 shades lighter then your foundation...figure out if you need a peach based, pink based or yellow based concealer according to the undertones of the skin (look at the skin on the inside of your wrist, and try to find a concealer that has that same natural color and try it under your eyes...if it looks natural, it's a good match!). The biggest mistake most women make is that they cover the WHOLE undereye area....so wrong! Try to dab one or two small dots in the inner part of the eye (the darkest), then with a finger, gently "push" (dab- tap) the color in the skin until it disappears (NEVER rub it across the eye).

The final step is to powder; use a powder specially designed for under eye areas- it's more finely milled than face powder and won't "cake" (Laura Mercier has a killer one!!).

Use a nice bright blush or gloss to take the eyes away from that undereye area.

*Beauty Emergency: No time to wash your hair

So you snoozed more than you expected, and now there is no time to wash and blow dry your hair. No need for hats, hair bands or pony tails!

Fix: Quickly refresh your hair with a dry shampoo. Select one that is accurate for your hair type (moisturizing, excess oil...etc.) Separate your hair in sections, apply the dry cleanser to your roots, massage it in and brush it out. The result, fresh smelling locks.

*Beauty Emergency: You forgot the shaving gel!

It's usually one of the last things I think of when packing my suitcase...or run out of in the middle of the shower, but don't fret, there are substitutes!

Fix: I have many times used the lather effects of my creamy shower gel (I have a creamy/milky kind) and I have also shaved with conditioner. They are both thick and creamy (enough to mimic the texture of shave gel) and will protect your skin against nicks and cuts.

*Beauty Emergency: Hair Frizz

The weather is too blame for this pesky problem...too dry or too humid can cause our lovely hair to misbehave.

Fix: Usually I like to take care (prevent the problem) with Moroccan oil! It's a gods' sent product...I use it everyday and doesn't grease up my hair...plus it smells divine!

Leave-in conditioners are great for frizz problems.

But in a pinch, an easy remedy for frizz is hand lotion (not Vaseline!). Rub a tiny pea-sized amount between the palm of your hands and smooth it to the ends of your hair. Avoid the roots or it will look greasy.

If you have curly hair, scrunch on the lotion then leave the hair alone—finger combing will mess up your ringlets and cause even more frizz.

Beauty Make-up

I had a lot of fun with hair and make-up (I adore creatives), and got a chance to fit Kyla with my "home made" feather lashes ;)

New Projects

Hi fabulous friends,
I apologize for not having had the chance to post in a few months. I have been swamped with work, but that's Spring and Summer season for ya!
I have a new group of students to put through the ringer at the college, they are learning all the basic how-tos of Make-up Artistry. Funny how many some students assume Make-up Artistry would be an easy subject to study, obviously they tend to ignore the fact that Make-up artist have to deal with chemicals in make-up and chemistry and biology of the skin, all done in a sanitary function.
It's more like a nursing course than it is an art project! The artistry of it all of course comes into factor later, as well as the history of the make-up trends and the make-up giants of the past! Then there is the physics and mechanics of the machinery used, and lighting for photography, film and television. Having said all that...it is still a lot of fun!!!
I have also just wrapped up a film, and started a new one! Shooting for the movie industry is very demanding (long long hours and sometimes in extreme weather conditions) but I absolutely love it!!
I've had the chance to head the Make-up department for a fabulous show in the city. It was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of the city's most prestigious club "The Royal Glenora". The organizers set up an amazing Ice skating show "Ice Memories", where an incredible amount of figure skating champions delighted us with 7 Broadway musical on Ice!!
The first was "Cats", followed by "Hook", "Oz", "Vegas Baby", "Starlight Express", "Phantom of the Opera" and finally "Les Miserable"; it was an extraordinary following of talent!
I had the pleasure of applying make-up on many Olympians and the 4 times world champion Kurt Browning. What an amazing experience!
Of course, all this work was wrapped around make-up on the lovely ladies celebrating their graduations and wedding days.

I hope the summer will continue to bring more exciting projects!

Teaching Special Effects (SFX)

There are many reason why I love make-up, mostly though is because it's a form of expression for my art.
Beside Beauty and Fantasy make-up, I have had the privilege to play with air-brushing and the amazing art of Special Effects or commonly known as SFX.
I could not believe how much fun I would have making cuts, bruises and 3rd degree burns...and I hate the sight of blood!!! LOL
Once you get a taste of what is like to make an injury appear realistic, you simply can't stop! Then it becomes even more fun working with Crepe hair, bald caps and prosthetic appliances!
Teaching all of the SFX techniques to my students has also been an incredible journey, imagine getting paid for playing with molding wax, latex and gelatin!
The hardest part is not learning the various construction techniques but painting the piece to look realistic, and for that you need an "artistic eye", something I unfortunately can't teach!
Fortunately, most of my students possess the "eye", so it was a blast to teach them SFX and watch them create the Goriest Zombies and the most Fantastic Creatures (which looked like something right out of a "Narnia" film).
I would encourage all of you make-up lovers to give SFX a try...I never knew how much fun it could be!!

Bridal Magazine Makeup

At the end of the Summer I had been asked by my good friend (from Tru Beauty Services) to do the makeup for the shoot she was styling. Knowing that she does exquisite hair styling, I could not refuse such offer; little did I know that we would have the time of our life at the shoot, where we met so many wonderful people!

I have kept in touch with the photographer, Cindy Gannon (with whom I collaborated again) and the editor of SomethingBlue Bridal magazine, who ended up being a stellar person!

I am over the moon that they chose our pictures for the cover and the editorial, and I am pleased to share this new makeup accomplishment with all of you. Becoming a Makeup Artist

Anyone with a brush set these days calls him/herself a Makeup Artist, but truth is that a Good professional Makeup Artist is hard to find!

Becoming a professional Makeup Artist is not just about applying makeup, and this is not a profession that should be taken lightly. The Beauty Industry is a highly competitive, multi billion dollar industry that requires an enormous amount of dedication in order to achieve any form of success.

There are a few elements to consider in becoming a respected and in demand professional:

First and foremost is talent, skills can be learned but a natural artistic talent is mandatory!

A solid education is also important, whether achieved through school or self taught- a professional Makeup Artist needs to know and follow all aspects of the industry.

Always being on top of trends, techniques and products, by reading industry publications and following pop culture.

Skills must be perfected through a great deal of practice, it takes years to master all the skills of a professional Makeup Artist.

Sanitary practices have to reflect a sterile environment, or you could be liable for spreading an infection or causing terrible reactions- Keep the makeup kit and brushes clean and the tools and hands always disinfected.

Great Attitude is 90% of the Makeup Artist fundamental, it is important to be polite, diplomatic and problem solving, with an attitude of servitude.

Appearance is also really important! The clients need to have a positive first impression, you are a walking advertisement of your work at all times!

Be a great listener, to figure out what the client wants and needs, and at the same time be a good conversationalist- keep the chit chat light and pleasant, no gossip, heavy subjects, inappropriate conversation or colorful language should ever occur with clients or other industry professionals!

Be kind, polite, punctual and prepared and you will be a success!

Make-Up *A Freelance Business

The Make-up course has come to an end, now you are a certified Make-up Artist (MUA), have a basic kit and are super excited to get started...so where to go from here?
I remember how hard it was to get started, especially when I didn't know anyone in the business. Here are a few words of advice on the next step from someone who has "been there, done that."

At the beginning of any Make-up artist career, building a Portfolio is a necessity; there are a lot of photographers and models who are willing to shoot with new make-up artists, and will provide images (most of the time digital photos) in exchange for make-up services.
Model Mayhem is a nice networking website for Beauty professionals, to find people in your area. Try to have a diversified portfolio, some Beauty Make-up, some Fantasy and some Bridal at least (even if not a "real" bride).

Invest in Business cards, most on-line office supply stores will offer a package of 250/500 cards for less than $50.

Be professional, introduce yourself properly, do not lie about your capabilities - always better to underpromise and overdeliver!!

Give out a business card when networking and take the other person's business card (if applicable).
Follow up on encounters with an email and respond to every email promptly.
Volunteer on fashion shows productions and photoshoots, even as an assistant, it's a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Networking is the biggest skill and asset in this business! You are a NOBODY until professionals know you exist!

Look your best at all times, no one will hire someone who looks like hell.

When on a job site, be polite, patient and pleasant. Listen to what the client wants. Never, ever, ever gossip or criticize products or the work of another artist with a client. Keep the conversation light hearted and simple. Talk about them, not just yourself. Compliment the client on one of their features (but be honest), sometimes it's their skin or their eyelashes; just don't overdo it!

Record all the purchases and earnings or designate a bank account for the Make-up jobs, as a freelance make-up artist it is important to declare all your earnings and expenditures.

Another advice is keep learning! Find make-up publications to stay up to date, whether be library books, magazines, websites, youtube videos etc.

Take pictures of every make-up you do (get permission first of course), and double check on a job with people in charge before you publish any image -some magazine shoots, movies and commercials will not allow images getting published before the product or production is released.
Taking pictures on a film set without permission could get you fired on the spot (even if it's of a rainbow in the sky). Before and After pictures are great for the portfolio.

Another great place to get started in a Make-up career is through a Hair Salon. Bring the resume and portfolio (no matter how small) and meet with the owner/manager.

Make-Up Kit * Cosmetics

Now that you have read "Make-up Kit * Brushes", and know which basic tools to purchase, let's talk about Make-up!!!

The Make-up case to choose is only a personal preference, I started with a small metal case, then moved on to a large and now carry a really large case with wheels (it is actually a Scrapbooking case I purchased at a local art supply store, was a fraction of the price of a make-up case and it's fabulous!!!). Regardless of the choice of make-up case, make sure it's always super clean and organized, nothing turns off a client more than a dirty case!

A lot of make-up artist I know swear on Primers, I have used almost all of the popular primers out there, but honestly, I don't find a need for them (at least not for a make-up that doesn't need longevity). It is a good idea to invest in one or two of the best ones to even out really bad complexions. I like to use the Smashbox primers or the Make Up Forever HD primers, the clear and the colored ones. Sometimes a peach colored matte primer is all a model needs!!!
I like the Smashbox primer for lids and lips (dual stick), works great and you have two in one!

Foundation is a product I would never buy cheap! As the base for everything and the first layer of cosmetic to touch the client skin, I want the best of the best!
I have a lot of foundations but always tend to use the Make Up Forever HD foundations. They are a bit of an investment but the super pigmented formulation needs only a few drops for complete coverage. This foundation dries matte, so I often mix it with liquid shimmers to get more of a dewy look.
If less coverage is needed, I go to my trusted tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier, love love love the oil-free formula!
For my air-brush I like Dinair and Temptu foundations. I was once adviced by a very inexperienced make-up retailer to use regular liquid foundation in my air-brush...what a mistake that was!!
Since these products can be costly, don't go off and buy one in every color; all you need is 4 or 5 of them, ranging from the lightest to the darkest, have a medium one for olive tones (yellow base) and have the darkest be one cool (for blue-black) and one more like chocolate milk for warmer skin tones; spend some time in learning how to mix the foundations to achieve the custom colors. After all these years I still don't buy a foundation line in every color, and I have never encountered a problem!

Concealer and camouflage are a crucial part of the kit as well. If possible buy a palette of concealers (or wheels), which will provide a lot of choices. I like Ben Nye concealer wheel, even though I often use the wheel for camouflage (given the density of the product). Laura Mercier has great concealer/camouflage duos, which come with a setting powder as well (fantastic product!). Just like for the foundation, invest in 3 or 4 tones of concealers, from light to dark.

A word on Correctors, first find out how to use them, then purchase some! I had green corrector in my kit for years before I found the courage to use it...I just didn't want to turn anyone into the Hulk! Correctors are fantastic products, and when used well, they can make a huge difference. Make Up Forever has amazing palettes for correctors.

Setting Powders, are used to set the liquid and cream base products (foundations, concealers, camouflage). I like MAC's mineralized skin powders, also Ben Nye for a more intense job on a stage production, like a musical.

Rouges/Blush can change the feel of the make-up, there are amazing colors out there, and it's up to the make-up artist to decide how many to have. I have some spluges from NARS (my favorite is "orgasm"), and from Stila, MAC etc.
The best way to start is to buy a delicate rose, a hot pink, a peach and a maroon color.

Bronzers are also a great purchase. Buy a matte bronzer so it can serve as a contour powder and blush base. I love the ones carried by Benefit, MAC, and NARS.

Shimmers are also important, Benefit has some great liquid ones (Moon Beam and High Beam) relatively inexpensive and easy to mix with foundations. As for powders I go to my goldish colored blush from NARS ("Albatross"), almost invisible to the naked eye, but gives amazing cheekbones in photographs. *I put the powder shimmer on with a fan brush*

Eyeshadows...well, go crazy!!! Just kidding!
Try to find a palette with most colors to start off. Be sure to check that it has both shimmer and matte eyeshadows. Don't buy super cheap or the color pay off will be horrible, buy a mid-range palette. Tarte has some nice ones as well as Too Faced and NYX. Then, as the time progresses and the jobs start to pay I recommend putting together personalized palettes. MAC and Make Up Forever are some of my go to companies for my custom eyeshadow palettes. I have a neutral one for Bridal Make-up, Crazy pinks and purples, blues and greens for Fashion and Fantasy, as well as a sparkles one!
I also recommend the 12 color Cream eyeshadow palette from Make Up Forever, later on in your career, for Fashion and Fantasy make-ups (which includes metallic colors).

Eyeliners, are a personal preference. I use gel liner from MAC to line the lashes, I love how precise and mess free it is (apply with a synthetic angle brush), Kohl pencils (Stila and Estee Lauder) for the waterline and liquid liner occasionally for fantasy makeup (MAC). These products last a long time, so go ahead and buy few but good ones.

Mascara, I personally buy cheap!! The life span of a mascara is 3 months, so I go through a lot of them, and I find that the formulation of store brand mascaras, like L'Oreal, Maybelline, Rimmel is just as good as the big cosmetic companies products (if not better). My favorite (and has been for years) is "Double Extend" from L'Oreal. Have a regular and waterproof formula to choose from, as well as a lengthening and a volumizing formula, according to what the client needs. Use waterproof only when necessary (like Bridal make-up), because the product is drying and will damage lashes in the long run.

Lipstick is also a cheap product I buy, mostly because I have had better results from Rimmel and Revlon than from the bigger companies. I like Make Up Forever and MAC for Fashion colors (Black, Purple etc.)

Lipglosses are just as important as lipsticks, if not more! Find a nice non-stick/non-smelly formula and buy a pink, a peach and a wine color gloss; if you want to push it a step further buy a gold a hot pink and a red one too. NARS has some of the best formulas available, as well as MAC, with a fantastic selection of colors. Start with NYX lipglosses if on a budget, they are great!

False Lashes are often necessary in most make-ups. I buy Ardell, they are not expensive and have the thinnest base. Have some shorter ones and individual clusters (for Street make-up & Bridal), medium length for Fashion make-up and some crazy long ones for Fantasy make-up. Buy the appropriate lashes when you get booked for a job, so you won't have to invest too much up front.
*Remember that lashes need to be charged extra on a make-up job - it is common to charge double the amount of the cost of the lashes- of course the client gets to keep the lashes! *
My go to false lashes glue is DUO in dark. Only need one tube (will last a long time).
Lashes are so easy to apply, but require a lot of practice (do practice on other people, False lashes application on oneself is different than application on others...just like mascara application!).

Remember, don't go spend thousand of dollars in make-up all at once to stock up your kit. If registered for a Make-up course, wait until you begin the course, as most schools provide you with a basic kit.
Same goes for more experienced make-up artist being booked for a film or theatre production, as most productions offer a budget for supplies. Ask the cosmetic supply store if they offer a pro or student discount, most of them do, but need to apply early in advance before going shopping. Most companies also offer a student kit at a discount price, but proof of student registration is needed.

Let your Make-up kit grow with time and experience.

Make-Up Kit * Brushes

I have received an interesting amount of emails regarding my Make-up kit: what's in it? in what make-up is worth investing a lot of money? on which Make-up products can I save money? How do I get started?
Since this is a very large topic, I will write a few articles on the subject. Starting with this one.
Here is what I recommend to my Make-up students:

First of all, you are only as good as your tools! Having said that, don't rush over to the most expensive Make-up store and spend a fortune on a set of make-up brushes!!
I have brushes from all make-up companies and art supply stores! True that a "full set" looks pretty and professional, but not all of the big make-up companies have the best of everything! M.A.C. has great brushes, but I don't love all of them, same with Smashbox etc.
Make sure to know the use of the make-up brush you are purchasing first, and ask yourself: will I use it often, or is it a splurge?
I have done full make-up with a total of 5 brushes in the past, given it took a lot of cleaning...but it's doable!
So if you are just getting started make sure to invest in these basic brushes:

1. A big fluffy Powder Brush. Natural bristles. Make sure the brush is soft and the bristles don't come off easily (or you will constantly pick them off the client's face!). Test the handle, so it doesn't fall off on the first tug! Use the brush to powder the face for a flawless look.

2. A Blush Brush. Smaller than the powder brush, is used to apply blush. Natural soft bristles.

3. A Contour Brush. A natural bristle brush, cut at an angle. Will contour cheek bones, temple bones etc.

4. A Large Eyeshadow Brush. A flat rounded edges brush, which will apply a lot of eyeshadow in a short period of time. Use the brush to apply base color eyeshadow all over the lid.

5. A Smaller Eyeshadow Brush. Will deliver more eyeshadow with precision and allow for smaller details.

6. A Domed Eyeshadow Brush. Used for blending the colors together, or "smoke" the eyeshadows.

7. An Angle Brush. A small synthetic hair brush used to line the eyes with a liquid, gel or cream eyeliner. Also used for filling in brows and other small details. I have 6 or 7 in my kit (different sizes and density), couldn't work without them!!

8. A Concealer Brush. Also a synthetic bristle brush which will deliver a creamy concealer just where need it. Go small in size rather than large for precision (invest in a large one later on for creamy contouring and highlighting).

These are my recommendations in essentials for a brush set! Every other make-up brush to purchase is for preference or specific products application.
I lost count on how many brushes I have with me now, but I have purchased them throughout the years, so be patient and don't go drop all your money in every brush produced until you will have a use for them!

A few pro tips:

Art supply stores have a range of inexpensive synthetic brushes. That's where I load up on small angle brushes!!

Use a ring of colorful Nail polish to "mark" all your brushes; that way there won't be any brushes going missing when working with other Make-up artists. Especially useful during a make-up course, where all the brushes and products given to the students look the same!

If planning to take a Make-up course, wait before purchasing a set of make-up brushes, as the school might provide a set.

Other tools needed:

An Eyelash Curler. Yes, even if personally not using one; a lot of clients will need a good curling! I don't spend a lot of money on a curler, just make sure feels comfortable and has replaceable plastic cushions where the lashes are curled.

Small pointy scissors. Used to cut false eyelashes for sizing, cut eyebrows for grooming etc. The uses are countless; I once lent my scissors to a hairdresser for cutting bangs to a precise angle!

Tweezers. A metallic set, that can be easily sanitized. Perfect for grooming eyebrows and other stray hairs and also for holding on to the false lashes.

Lots of disposable Mascara wands (in different sizes). Never, ever, ever use the Mascara wand that goes back in the container, unless you are planning to give the whole mascara to the client to keep.
Disposable wands are used to keep the mascara free of contaminants and avoid spreading of infections. By the way, don't double dip the disposable wands, use one for each eye!!!
Remember the life span of Mascara is about 3 months, once starts changing consistency and odor, toss it out!!!

Disposable Foundation Sponges. I personally like applying foundation with a brush, but I still have sponges to blend to perfection.

If you don't have a lipstick brush (synthetic bristles brush, also available in art supply stores), then purchase a few disposable ones.

A palette knife (also available in art supply stores), or orange wood sticks. Use the knife to scoop products from the containers like stick foundations & concealers, lipsticks, gel & cream eyeliners...anything creamy really. Never, ever, ever dip a brush or fingers into the creamy products or they will be contaminated!

Cotton Pads. Used to clean, tone and moisturize faces.

Small Towels. I have 3 black ones with me all the time. Use one to set on the Make-up table, so all products and brushes won't get contaminated. The second one, put around the client's neck (if no smock is available), and the third towel, hang on the Make-up belt to clean the brushes.

Plenty of brush cleaner, hand sanitizers and baby wipes. The more the merrier!!! You can never be too clean and the clients love seeing how careful you are!!! Always sanitize and cleanse hands and brushes between clients (yes, even if the clients are related!!!), no excuses! Clients will gladly wait for brush cleaning time!

Have a good set of hypoallergenic Cleanser, Toner and Moisturizer. I always cleanse the face, even if the client is make-up free, makes a huge difference!

Make Up and Styling as a career

Hi Friends,

I have been super busy lately and so excited to be working on so many fun projects.
Had the pleasure, this season, to style for Levi's and for the grand re-branding of Mark's, two amazingly generous companies! I have met and collaborated with so many talented artists, that I find it nothing short of a blessing!
Then there is the Wedding Season, which is just starting to slow down, if you were one of the brides I Made Up for the Special day, I want to thank you for including me in the joyous celebrations! I just love doing Make Up for the lovely brides and their bridal parties, always leave feeling great!
Fashion Week is around the corner, and the collaboration with some of the city's finest designers is the cherry on the cake!
Halloween is just around the corner...yeeeeah I love Halloween Make Up, it's so much fun! And even though I will be in a course most of the day, my evening is already booking up with Fantasy Make Up for party goers.
I have also had the great pleasure to do Make Up for City TV, here is a TV Segment CityTv Edmonton shot recently.
I am looking forward working and growing in this wonderful industry. I would recommend any of you who wants to pursue your Artistry to jump in with both feet and work as hard and as enthusiastically as you can and you will never look back!!

New Hair Style

OMGoodness, I almost completely forgot to tell you...I chopped off all of my hair (well most of it haha). I wanted a change so bad, and after taking my 14 inches red brown curls to an asymmetric chocolate brown bob...I decided I needed something more drastic, so I pulled a Halle Barry!!!
I adore my new look, it's so easy and pretty! Now I look like the rockstar I am on the inside!

Blushing Bride- Make Up

As the wedding season approaches, I've had the pleasure to reassure every bride I've booked that their day will be memorable!!!
It is a huge concern of these beautiful women that they look as good as everything else they have planned, and it's understandable...after all, they ARE the brides, and all eyes will be on them! (sorry grooms, it's the truth!).
So here is a brief of what I suggest to my lovely brides before the big day.
Firstly, do not get so worked up...it will come together and it will be amazing! Stress is a big cause of blemishes, discolorations and lack of sleep! Want to look your best as a "natural" beauty, then you need to take a Chill-pill and relax!
Remember to drink plenty of water, no you won't be bloated...unless you are severely dehydrated and your body is trying to hold on to as much water as possible! Try a beauty regimen of taking a water bottle along your wedding day planning trips, and MOST importantly...drink the water!! LOL
Take care of all the Aesthetics needs well before the wedding day. Facials, waxing and other services need to be cared for a few weeks before the big day!
Meet with your Make Up artist one to two weeks prior to the wedding, so the final Make Up look is fresh in your artist's mind, and wear the trial make up the whole day to see the "Staying power" of the make up products your artist uses; this will also reveal any Make Up allergies your skin might have, as well as any other reactions, like oily discharges (easily fixed with blotting paper).
Please, do not allow a girl at a Make Up counter to "Get it right" on the morning of the wedding, it's too risky and might spoil your mood. Go to a professional who's familiar with your skin and the products to be used.
Another word of caution, do not use "Street Make Up" (or in other words "Everyday Make Up") for your wedding day, a lot of the ingredients used in everyday make up can react with the photographer's flash, making your face appear 4-5 times lighter than it is!!! That's why most of us have pictures where we look ghostly pale, even though we spent an hour getting ourselves all made up!
A real make up artist has studied the cosmetics ingredients, knows what to use and has PROFESSIONAL products in her kit!!
Do NOT, EVER EVER EVER trust a Make Up artist with dirty brushes, sponges etc.
A real Make Up Artist will have all the necessary cleaning supplies to disinfect the tools and assure a healthy Make Up application...I cringe when I see someone use the same (uncleaned) brush on a few people in a row...yewww!!!
In conclusion, my dear Brides, I want you to relax, take care of yourselves before anyone else, and shop around for a True professional to make you shine in all your beauty on your wedding day.

Packing Your Suitcase

A new Winter season is at our doors and with the cold weather comes also the desire to get away.
Whether you're jetting off for a long getaway or a week on a resort, these tricks will ensure you will have everything you need.

Make a List: Everything you think you will need on your trip, from Clothing to Toiletries. Lay everything out on a bed and check off the items on your list, so you won't forget anything (the check list is also great in case the airline loses your suitcase, it's a record of everything you packed).

Pick a General Color scheme: That way your clothes always go together and you never pack a shirt you won't be able to use. Stick with neutral basics and add a few touches of color with accessories (fun jewelry, scarves and belts). Always bring a lightweight sweater jacket for layering.

Always Pack sexy shoes: At least one pair of high heel shoes can dress up any outfit, even shorts!

Avoid Wrinkles: Softly fold you clothes and pack them separately -don't layer softer fabrics with harder ones. Pack jeans with jeans and cotton shirts with cotton shirts. Layer the heaviest fabrics at the bottom and the lightest at the top.
Pack a wrinkle remover for a special outfit. Hang the outfit, spray it gently with the wrinkle remover and smooth it down with the palm of your hand. Leave it hanging until dry.

Store Jewelry Separately: Pack the pieces of jewelry in a freezer bag to avoid it snagging your clothes and wrap each piece in tissue paper, to avoid them tangling and getting broken.

Never pack Documents in the suitcase: Keep all your documents on yourself at all times, never pack important documents, money or cards in your suitcase.

Great Skin Care- Dermalogica

You should all know by now what a big keener I am in learning about beauty products, so it will be no surprise that I attended another skin care course today. I have recently learned about a skin care line with amazing credibility and I wanted to do my own research, to my amazement I am in love!!!
Dermalogica is a skin care line started by Jane Wurwand, the skin therapist who's also credited for founding The International Dermal Institute (IDI) in the Los Angeles area in 1983. Since no other skin care line embraced her belief of skin health (as opposed to "beauty"), she developed her own skin care line (in 1986).
I was very much impressed by the brand: it is a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including Lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors, and fragrances) and improves skin health (instead of only cosmetic concerns).
I was excited to learn that all the Dermalogica products are manufactured in the USA, never have taken part in animal testing and is sold ONLY where professional consultation and professional treatment are performed by trained skin therapist (Professional Spas).
Dermalogica is also a privately owned company (not owned by a beauty conglomerate, hoding company or financers) and is driven first by Education and Research!!!
I was so excited to get my hands on their Skin bar today...let me tell you about their products;
they have an impressive array of skin care: Cleansers, exfoliants, moisturizers (from tinted to Acne prone skin) hand creams, a sun protection line, a Age Smart line, an Acne line (one for adult Acne and one for teenagers), a men's line (from shaving products to deodorant), a treatment foundation line and even shampoo!
Every corner of the face and body is analyzed by their skin therapist through "Skin Mapping" and every single inch of your body can be prescribed with the specific product to suit its needs!
During the class we had the privilege to try on all the products and as I said previously I am in love with Dermalogica! It is a statement which I do not make easily with many skin care lines (especially after my Adult Acne breakouts) as my standards are quite high, but I found that Dermalogica products are as true as it claims and their representative more knowledgeable and honest than I expected.

Hi everyone, I decided to show you how I do a day makeup application with some videos.

Skin Deep- When Acne Attacks!

If there is one think I was always know for was my flawless skin – wait, before you start booing, we all know nothing is forever!

After my son was born a change in Hormones caused my face to break out uncontrollably, with daily bumps and red spots that became more and more obvious and harder to cover up.

As a fashionista and a beauty consultant I wanted to hide my face under the sand!
I tried all the creams and treatments at the drug store, but nothing worked, it actually seemed to aggravate my skin.

So, in desperate search for a cure I went to my GP to get recommended to a dermatologist. Turns out that the wait for a visit to the dermatologist can take 3 to 6 months…enough time to do serious damage to your skin! But luckily I have a very knowledgeable Doc, who prescribed me antibiotics!! Really!! I had no idea that it could be cured with antibiotics, and I did a bit of research, so listen up: According to my GP, for Acne Vulgaris over-the-counter meds are crap!

Those with mild acne will only have an occasional pimple, but if the problem is not controlled it can worsen and the number of pimples will increase; in severe cases it can turn into very painful cysts which can leave permanent scars on the skin.

Contrary to what people believe, poor eating habits are not a cause of acne, just like washing the skin often is not the key to prevent acne. However, it is to my amazement that some beauty products (oil-based) can aggravate acne!!

Here is the advice I received: Wash your face twice a day with a mild soap like Dove©, SpectroJel© or Cetaphil© - massaging the soap on the skin for at least 30 seconds. These soaps are not expensive and can be purchased at any drug store.
Use a mild moisturizer for sensitive skin, like Imprüv©, and an oil-free sun block cream for outdoor time (since the antibiotics make your skin more sensitive to the sun harmful rays).

Then I received an oral antibiotic and a topical antibiotic cream containing Benzoyl Peroxide to apply to my whole face- given the peroxide in it, you should be careful as it can discolour you hair and clothing.

Disclaimer: Obviously, this is the treatment for my level of acne. On more severe cases another preparation containing Tretinoin can be prescribed to soften up the superficial layer of the skin, and in extreme situations a powerful vitamin A derivative, Isotretinoin (Accutane®) is prescribed.
DO NOT put in your own hands to cure such a serious skin condition as acne! Visit a doctor as soon as possible, often on mild cases your GP can be very helpful in treating it, before you have to visit a specialist.

Welcome BBE Jewelry

Lately I have been so busy with Styling photoshoots and my involvement with the magazine that I just grew tired of having to hunt down jewelry designers!!

I love accessorizing with an artist creation, but at time borrowing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was just a big added stress to my job.

So I started to create my own pieces...and then got hooked!!!

I never knew what a great creative outlet jewelry making was going to be. And it's so much fun too!

My creative process starts with finding good beads - only the prettiest products- then I look at beads collectively get inspired and start to assemble the final product. Once I'm done with one piece of jewelry I immediately think of the piece to layer with, and of the rest of the jewelry set.

In the end the jewelry piece is a fashionable accessory, great to layer with other pieces and most of all, something I would wear!

Look forward to my Jewelry Photo Gallery, as I have decided to sell some of these unique pieces.

Golden Globes 2009- Worst Fashion on the Red Carpet

We discussed what made us love the Golden Globes 2009 red carpet, now let's illustrate what not to do, and where some of these celebrities got it wrong:

Taraji P. Anderson's gown has too many frilly pieces of fabric which distract from the nice fit. I love her H. Stern jewelry. I don't hate the look, I know though, when it comes to fashion she can do so much better!

Presenter Sting, must have received his invitation late! What in the world!!!??? his beard looks at least 2 days past the rock star look! I don't mind the fashion too much but he could have been much edgier for a rock legend!

Oh poor Mickey Rourke!!! We are all so glad he made a come back, but why would he dress in the dark for such a big occasion?? Something here went terribly wrong! And someone please tell him to stop plumping his face...not cute!

Marisa Tomei went from my best dressed list at the People's Choice Awards to the bottom of the barrel. What's with the lacy pirate shirt and the nun skirt? I love the belt and the many strands of necklaces, but the rest doesn't suit her quirky-fun personality very well.

Maggie Gyllenhaal took a chance on the Red Carpet with the leopard print Lanvin dress...and failed miserably! The head to toe print is waaaay too overwhealming on her figure...it's like a leopard swallowed her whole! Hair and makeup is really nice though.

Cute Hayden Panettiere picked a great color for the Red Carpet, and is well in with the season's trends, however the fit of her purple Ferrè gown is all wrong for her. It looks like she has a man's chest and no waist. I love her hair and makeup: very polished and classy!

Leave it to Heidi Klum to sport the edgiest fashions on the red carpet. However this time, even "the Body" couldn't sustain the puffy dress with a huge red flower on the hip and the dominatrix 5 inch sandals! Heidi, something's gotta give! Once again...I love her hair and makeup, and her accessory, Seal, looks great as well!

The amazing Glen Close opted for a pant suit for the Red Carpet event. Nothing wrong with the pant suit, except that being all in gold she looks like one of the Oscar's statuettes!

Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins, chose a black sheer top gown; which couldn't have been more wrong for her skin color! Her porcelain skin makes her look like Morticia Adams instead of a doll! Her makeup is too pale and the lack of color in the accessories, takes her down to the bottom of my list!

I usually like Cameron Diaz choices for the red carpet, and I don't mind the color she chose for the Golden Globes Red Carpet. However she looks like she just came from the beach! The style of the dress, looks like a wrapped a curtain and her hair looks hair dried...ouch, not pretty!

Blake Lively is going to the prom! Oh no wait...this is her dress from last night's Golden Globes awards. Oh boy, didn't anyone tell her she would be walking the Red Carpet? She is so Blah...not interesting at all!

We need to see more Lively attire from a young vibrant woman like Blake!

I knew that she was going to show bling! Nothing wrong with bling or with showing your curves, except that I have a Sausage in my fridge less contricted than Beyonce! This beautiful Elie Saab dress is definitely a couple of sizes too small! Having said that, I absolutely love her collar Lorraine Schwartz necklace and her hairstyle!

Beautiful Angelina Morticia Jolie, blew it big time with the bloused shapeless Versace gown! Is Angelina Jolie hiding another pregnancy or is she purposely trying to live down her "most beautiful woman in the world" title? She definitely has more curves than that column figure she's parading at the Golden Globes, and her hair needs to be up (at least to show the curve of her neck!).

Beautiful and super talented Amanda Seyfried, paraded down the Red Carpet in a pale gray draped goddess gown. I found that the color did absolutely nothing for her fair skin and the style was too old fashioned for a "Mamma Mia" young emerging star! Not my favourite look on her!

Ah...the crazy print! I was waiting for someone to commit the sin! The empire waist gown with the deep V is a great choice for Jenna Fischer's body, the print however...need I say more?

Oh poor Anna Paquin, she looks so sad in this mauve dress! Someone give her some color... please - maybe a red lip or some dramatic chandelier earrings! Her hair does not save her either, too severe!

Golden Globes 2009- Best Fashion on the Red Carpet

Oh wow, most of my Golden Globes Red Carpet predictions came true!!!
The biggest trends on the Red Carpet were: Mermaid and tiered skirts gowns with a strapless or one shoulder bodice, gold and colored stones jewelry, subdued makeup and hair-with an increasing number of red lips throughout the night- Metallic clutches and a lot of bold jewelry.
However I did not foresee the sea of black and beige gowns!!! Talk about lack of imagination...with all the fantastic choices from the Spring/Summer 2009 Collections, most celebrities chose to play it safe!

Here is a summary of my favourite from the Golden Globes Red Carpet, the rest of the pictures can be found in the fashion community (Events Gallery)- I will post my least favourite Red Carpet fashion in another article.

Best Dressed

Holy moly...Colin Farrell was smoking hot...I'm not only talking about his win at the Golden Globes, but also about his fashion!!! He looked polished and so red carpet worthy; he punched up the classic tux look with a touch of color in his vest...Two thumbs up Colin!

What a better way to style up a classy tuxedo than with a bit of Satin? Very stylish choice from Tom Cruise who looked impeccable and timeless (as usual!).

I'm not a big Tina Fey fan on the red carpet, and even though she played safe with black, she looked very glamorous in this halter top gown with a drop neckline.

This is how you do stripes on the Red Carpet! Wow, Viola Davis' brown illusion-dress fits her like a glove and she looked amazing!!!

The White J. Mendel gown was an excellent choice for Kate Beckinsale...she looks so glamorous with her ruffled top which was a nice contrast with the severely pulled back hair. The blue tone jewelry was a great contrast.

One of the most beautiful women on the planet (in my opinion), did not come short to wow the croud a the Golden Globes. Megan Fox looked stunning in this simple gold dress with sheer embroidered overlay and emerald green jewelry and clutch. The 22 inch-waist celebrity looked gorgeous!

If you must do black on the red carpet, this is how you should do it! Very elegant lines, effortless makeup and sophisticated hair. Kate Winslet stole the show (and a Golden Globe) in this black strapless Yves Saint Laurent dress.

I love this orange color on Madeline Zima, and the goddess style gown makes her look like..well, a goddess!

So soft, pretty and youthful, Demi Moore never ceases to amaze me! Her daughter Rumor is old enough to be Miss Golden Globe, yet she looks like a 30 year old. The pale pink gown is gorgeous on her skin tone and hair color.

Beautiful Christina Applegate looked so adorable in pale yellow and red lips. I wish she would have turned it up a notch with some colored gems or a colored clutch, nevertheless she still looks amazing.

Who in the world did her hair??? They should be shot!!! How can you possibly make a beautiful woman like Drew Barrymore in a jaw-dropping Dior by John Galliano grey chiffon gown with the most perfect accessories, look like a prom queen?? The hair ruins it for me, but the rest is so amazing!

At first glance I did not recognize the stunning girl in the purple dress...then I realized it was Rumor Willis, also Miss Golden Globes 2009! Wow, the red hair looks so much better on her than the severe black color she had. The gown is amazing and I love the jeweled belt!

"House" Jennifer Morrison is amazing in the electric blue Oscar de la Renta strapless gown, but most of all I love the Lorraine Schwartz jewels and her perfect size clutch.

Oh America Ferrera, how amazing! I love the girl fashion choices, they work so perfectly for her body. The grey color is fantastic on her skin, the one shoulder strap gown makes it sexy, the metallic accent keeps it interesting and the cropped lenght makes the gown really age appropriate and fresh...what is there not to love?? One thing I would add, a colorful clutch ( a deep red, or ice blue).

Golden Globe's Award - Red Carpet Fashion

Hours away from the Golden Globes Awards Red Carpet, we await anxiously to see all the beautiful fashion the celebrities will parade in Beverly Hills.

With amazing movies and fantastic shows on TV, we will be expecting a star studded night!

The Big celebrities I look forward to, are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Anne Hathaway, Kate Bekinsale and Marisa Tomei, who usually amaze me! Oh, let's not forget about my dearest Johnny Depp...I sure hope he will show!

I'm expecting Tina Fey in black, Kate Winslet in a romantic frock, George Clooney and Leonardo Di Caprio in their usual boring black suit.

I'm interested to see what Beyonce -usually a hit or miss- is going to wear. Milo Ventimiglio is also another of my favourite on the red carpet, excited to see if he continues with his stylish picks.

I'm already liking what the hosts are wearing, and keeping in true fashion to the runway choices I'm expectin a lot of chiffon and sheer fabrics, metallics accents and floral themes and a lot of short fun dresses; as for colors a lot of vibrant colors gowns (purple, tangerine, lime, yellow), and some black basics. As for jewelry, a lot of big bold necklaces, bold cuffs and cocktail rings.

Hair is simple with free hanging updos, makeup simple and natural as well with dramatic smokey eyes.

People's Choice Award- Best and Worst Dressed List

Another year has began and with it the so awaited Award Season...and we begin the year with a boom!

I have to say, after watching a few of the award events in the past nights, my list of worst dressed is very short; I mostly condemn these fashions, not as atrocities but as boring choices! And this time I choose to call them Safe & Boring choices, rather than worst dressed.

Let's begin with my most favourite/out of the box choices:

Best Dressed

Country Singer Carrie Underwood hits the mark with this gorgeous lime green Empire-waist tiered gown! The color is vibrant and the embroidery elegant especially when accessorized with Cinta by John Hardy Jewels. This was her backstage dress (1 out of 3 changes), but much more red-carpet worthy than her floral dress!

Dress number 2 for miss Carrie Underwood was a tangerine bejeweled short dress by Jenny Packham SS09 collection. The jeweled neckline is hot this upcoming season, as is the vibrant color!

The third and final dress choice (the red carpet pick of Carrie Underwood), is my least favourite of the 3; nonetheless, it's still a gorgeous dress with fabulous fit! The floral and metallic theme is hot this upcoming season, as the Naeem Khan Pre-fall 09 suggests. Carrie accessorizes it beautifully with Cinta by John Hardy Jewels and Mary Norton Clutch.

Jennifer Morrison metallic dress has to be my favourite of the night! The details on the bodice of the Gianfranco Ferré Spring 08 dress is so interesting and a perfect choice for the red carpet. Jennifer accessorizes it beautifully with Christian Louboutin slingbacks and a perfect grey clutch.

Marisa Tomei looked stunning in the strapless
vibrant red dress with asymmetrical hem line by Donna Karan. The choice of gold jewelry and accessories is exquisite. Marisa looks classy and timeless!

What a stunner Dakota Fanning. The teenager holds her own on the red carpet. The electric blue is fantastic against her skin and the one shoulder BCBG mini dress is very age appropriate. She keeps it simple and stunning with no jewelry or accessories.

Show host Queen Latifah, looked beautiful in her purple Georges Chakra Couture gown. The color is great against her skin and the chiffon and jeweled neckline makes it red carpet worthy.

Debra Messing took chances on the red carpet with the Steel grey Donna Karan dress and I love it! The choice of gold jewelry is also a great fit.

The interesting shape keeps it fresh and daring...awesome for a red carpet choice!

Paris Hilton is usually not one of my favourite dressed on the Red Carpet. I find that her choices are repetitive, and so she continues on the People's Choice Award red carpet with another one of her baby-doll dresses. However I can't deny how much I like the low cut full skirted Jenny Packham dress! The floral appliqué and gold sequins makes it fresh and pretty and the Fendi bag is a great accessory.

Safe & Boring Dressed

Ok, I don't think this is the worst dress on the red carpet, actually I think Jordin Sparks looks adorable in Jessica McClintock, and the vibrant blue is excellent; however I'm growing so tired of the prom queen look! If the dress could be worn at prom...it might not belong on the red carpet...it just needs a bit more edge when you are a superstar like Jordin!

I think I have this dress (in brown)!!!

Given that the steel grey is gorgeous and the fit on AnnaLynne McCord is amazing, I don't think a jersey/spandex dress fits on the red carpet...a club or a restaurant maybe! and I have seen this dress a million times!

Christina Applegate black chiffon dress by Jenny Packham is pretty and a bit more detailed than the boring LBD on the People's Choice Award's red carpet (to follow on the list). The sheen creates a few extra bulges.

Jennie Garth is looking very epoch in her LBD, especially with the red lips and big curls. And has been seen how many times already?? The red carpet has a need of fresh looks or it becomes plain Boring.

Exhibit A! Boring to the Nth degree! Reese Witherspoon has looked so much better on the red carpet, the LBD here is just plain lazy and playing it safe!

Imagine the possibilities with Lisa Edelstein's baby blues and gorgeous skin! The little blue accent in her dress already pops...however she decides to go safe with a boring and flat hued Black dress.

Social Media and Fashion Business

Lately, I have not only been addicted to Social Media Networks but also come to know the huge weight in Business-Networking they carry.
I am talking about networks as Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin (to name a few).

Many user learn these new technologies as a way to keep in touch with friends and family. In numerous occasion these tools have served well in resuscitating some old relationships and friendships. However many users fail to see that these social networks are an actual science! What seems to be a fad, it's actually a new networking way of doing business.

In the Fashion world, these media network photographers, agents, models, stylist and even buyers and retailers. It's incredible how entering one of these circles can boost a new career!

It is actually possible to meet professionals online, make sure their career comes highly recommended by people who know people we know and trust, and actually do business with them without even meeting in person!

An online recommendation is the most sought after credential in this Networking world!

It is also a must to be profiled in as many networks as possible; a professional not having a virtual profile, is seen as a negative, as a being-out-of-touch with the professional world -almost as serious as not having a business card or a phone!

I personally like to separate my fashion business contacts, from my friends and family. Keeping a secret identity -in a way- except when the two worlds collide and some of my professional contacts make it through to my friends list.

It is also vital to pay attention who you associate with in your online social networking, since a bad chip can sink the ship- and can get your reputation to go along with it to the bottom of the online abyss!
An On-line agent or photographer with a bad rep can and will ruin your credibility with future clients! So be extremely cautious. But don't get intimidated by the new technology, and don't ignore it, it won't just go away.
So be warned: if you fail to network yourself in these new media, you will be left in the dust!

How to Really Become a Successful Model

The Fashion Industry, is a wonderful field to experience! With so many different opportunities and so much glamour it's one of the fastest growing industry out there. Thousands of Magazines, TV shows and Online sites are dedicated to Fashion, and millions of people world wide aspire to have a career in this multi-million dollar industry.

But with the good comes the bad!!!

It's a dog-eat-dog industry, very cut throat and unforgiving. Like Heidi Klum says: "In this Industry one day you are in, the next you are out!". The world of modeling can also add it's own demons, with eating disorders and substance addictions.

How do you really become a Successful Model without falling victim to the
Industry Demons?

Well -believe it or not- I found the answer!!!

Recently I listened to a CD, which a very clever and experienced guru has released. It's "The Wizard of Editorial- How to Really Become a Successful Model" by Marie P. Anderson.

Miss Anderson, is not only a former model who has walked the walk, but she is also the author of two sold out internationally published books: Model, The Complete Guide To Become a Professional Model and Model, The Complete Guide for Men and Women.

She has co-produced the modeling documentary: Clean Face, Clean Hair. With many accolades to her name, one is being known as the booker that discovered the Supermodel, Cindy Crawford.

Being a model and talent agent in for the past 25 years, and having owned her own Chicago based Agency makes Miss Anderson a voice to be heard! She knows exactly what the new models will experience, since she has been on "both sides of the fence!" and like few others, she sees the NEED to educate new comers with the basic and advanced knowledge of the industry, in order to avoid the dangers and down-sides of it.

Her educational company Studio Galatea, offers amazing services, including live seminars with the expert herself.

In her CD, she talks about the crude reality of the fashion industry, giving a survival guide to the new beginners. She teaches the aspiring models how to set realistic goals, to find and contact a good agency and to establish a two-way working relationship with the booker. Best Holiday Gifts

Another Holiday season is upon us: the lights, the festive music, the decorated trees, everything seems to remind us that it's that time to go Holiday shopping!

It is a big dilemma every year, what to buy for our dear family and friends, trying to stay fresh and original with new ideas. But, sometimes classic gifts can take the guess work out of gift giving and still be very much appreciated.

Everyone on their list has that almost impossible person to shop for; this holiday gift stick with a classic! Who doesn't like a cashmere sweater, or scarf, gloves, hat? Cashmere is a luxurious fabric, and everyone likes a warm embrace by cashmere in the cold winter days. The best thing is that it's a present that fits both the men or women on your list.

Try to stay away from personal items like perfumes, shoes, sunglasses.

Opt instead for a more generic gift, with relevance to the person.

A lady likes her handbags, in every shapes, texture and color, so scout around for a nice addition to her wardrobe. Jewelry is almost never a miss either; to keep it affordable and original, visit a vintage store and find a great piece of custom jewelry ( a beautiful broach for her winter coat, or a necklace for the party dress), make sure it has an interesting story and it's wrapped in a beautiful box.

Most guys like their technology, anything from wireless headphones to a new laptop/iphone gadget. Especially relevant for teenage boys.

If technology is not the gift of choice then can't mess it up with leather! Try a new belt, or the cuff that all the male celebrities are wearing.

Ties are also a classic...well, almost a cliche, but a gift cannot be a miss with a gorgeous Italian silk tie!

Most teenage girls love their makeup, a great gift would be a start up kit of mineral makeup (which has muted tones of makeup...much appreciated by the parents) or a brush set. Or buy a Makeup case, the bigger the better!

Girls and women of every age love Organizers. Find a case with drawers of every size for their small items (jewelry/makeup/scrapbooking), then fill a couple of drawers with some "surprises".

Gift certificates can be impersonal most of the time, unless they are from the recipient's favourite store!

What if the money is a bit tight this year? Start a fund...show your wife/husband/child that you have started a saving fund for their favourite expensive handbag/shoes or the new laptop/gismo or the videogame station/bike...then you will (must) set aside a small amount every month for the item! But make sure the money is used to purchase the item at the end of the collection, or the fund idea loses it's charm! Then still get them something small to unwrap!

Books are great classic holiday gifts (and not too pricy), for your reader friends and relatives. Book lovers can't have enough books! The entrepeneur on your list would love a book as well, buy one in the related field of interest, or a self-help book on leadership, author John Maxwell has a great range.

For the engaged couple on the list a book about relationships: "The five love languages"and "Personality Plus" are a great start (also an excellent gift for a wedding shower). A scapbook (kit) to place their momentos of their new life together is also a thoughtful holiday gift.

For the impossible aunt/grandmother, go dust off an old picture of the two of you from the past(or herself as a child), make a larger copy and frame it. Wrap it in the most precious wrapping paper and a big bow to make it extra special.

Whatever you decide, remember that it's about giving and receiving...not about the expensive gift, so put some thought in the holiday gifts you select for your family and friend.

New Fall/Winter fashions trends

The New Fall /Winter ('08/'09) Season is upon us and with all the trends circulating right now, it's hard to sift through the stores for a sophisticated outfit. What to wear this holiday season?

I'm relying on Fashion Director Michael Fink, from Sask Fifth Avenue to give you a visual.

The Sask's WANT IT! LIST, provides women and men with basic wardrobe pieces to be stylish during the holiday season.

I agree with Fink, dresses are IN!

Try a pretty fitted dress for the Holiday Office party. A solid color or a soft print, with a bold necklace, tights, a gorgeous handbag (or clutch) and a pretty ankle boot, all topped by a great coat is classy and appropriate.

Invest in a three quarter length coat; try a soft color like Cream or Camel (it's always more sophisticated than the usual black or gray).

To be adventurous, try color tights...a beautiful wine color with your brown boots and fitted dress. Or a metallic tight to give a plain black boot a punch of color. However keep it classy, otherwise it can look costume-y.

Boots are essential this winter season and something to splurge on. Go for quality, rather than brand name. A well-made boot will last for many seasons and will keep you warm, dry and fashionable. Also it will make any outfit look "expensive"!

Man can invest in a great pair of ankle boots. Celebrities (like Colin Farrell, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and many more) are wearing the trend this season, from worn out slip-on boots to patened zippered boots. Wear them with casual and classy clothes for an edgy look.

Bold jewelry is also all the rage this season. Do a bold necklace on a soft blouse or a chunky bracelet with a clean lined dress. Cocktail rings are bigger and bolder, carry one from day to evening, by wearing it with any outfit, it's a statement piece! Do not wear too many bold pieces at once! If you wear a bold necklace then keep the earrings smaller. If you do a bold ring then move the chunky bracet to the other arm.

Keep the handbag in proportions with your body size. A bigger body frame needs a bigger bag, while a more petite body size needs a smaller bag.

Scarves are still hot. Pick a thin tweed one (Missoni style) to wrap around your neck to dress up a jeans, T-shirt and leather jacket outfit; or a big scarf to wrap around your neck to dress up a plain turtle neck sweather.

Skinny jeans are still hot! Wear them inside a favourite pair of boots. If skinny is not great for your body type, then opt for a straight leg pair of jeans, and wear them with ankle boots or a favourite pair of colorful pumps. Trouser jeans are also great and suit a more semi-professional environment; they can be dressed up or down, and are fantastic for the woman with the more sophisticated taste.

Beauty!!!

They are all "beautiful people"!

Even though they don't look alike, (like many others) they all fit in a "beauty" category.

We see it every year, magazines around the world: the most beautiful...sexiest...most attractive man/woman in the world!

The world is fascinated with beauty ranking: readers out there, buy millions worth of magazines which showcase the beauty of a certain star, and get wrapped up in the gossip and at time not so pristine lives of the celebrity.

But is beauty in the eye of the beholder? If so, why do so many people agree on classifying these celebrities as beautiful? And who decides?

The truth is, that there is a standard of skin-deep beauty which is universally agreed upon. And the Beauty industry thrives on it!!!

What and who is beautiful then?

From facial features, to body parts, to general appearance, most people agree on certain standards of beauty... and therefore giving plastic surgeons and cosmetic companies a hefty salary!

Many may argue this theory, but if looked closely, a lot of these stars share "the beauty standard" most people in the world strive for.

What makes a person's physical beauty? Starting with the face: baby-like features!

Big eyes (color doesn't really matter much), high rounded cheek bones, small button-like nose and big pouty lips. Man usually need in addition a strong jaw line, dimples and a great smile.

A tall, lean figure seems like a common beauty trait. Women share an hourglass body shape, with a medium sized chest, small waist, flat stomach and pretty hips.

The body is not too skinny, but fit and (appearing) flab-free.

Men are also taller, lean and fit and at times, sporting a well defined torso.

Big shoulders frame a smaller waist line and a flattering hair style to frame the pretty facial features.

According to the standard, Beauty is:

Youthful skin-it is a must! keeping the face wrinkle-free, age and sun spots-free, and meticulously cared for. No big pores, no facial hair (trimmed and well kept for some men), a well bronzed or porcelain-like skin color, with even texture. The face has to be blemish-free, well exfoliated and with a radiant glow.

Hair has to be shiny (a sign of health), well trimmed with a modern, face framing hair cut. Highlights usually follow a nicely bronzed skin, while a more saturated hair-color follows a sunless skin complexion.

The body is fit and hairless. The extremities (hands and feet), well exfoliated and manicured.

Do these celebrities really look that way though?

Well, likely for us mere "mortals", they don't!!!!

They spend countless hours and dollars to achieve the standard, taking care of their health, diet and overall physical appearance; but it's virtually impossible to be flawless as the standard claims!

Modern science, in the vest of plastic surgeon, cosmetologist, stylist and well trained photographers transform the celebrity to what we get to see in the magazines.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, regardless of what people claim, however when the beholder relates to a certain standard of beauty, the product is a most beautiful/sexiest/attractive woman and man in the world!

My Fast Life in the Fashion Lane

Back from working another Runway Fashion show at Fashion Week... and have to say, backstage it's a whole different world!

A world made of chaos, piles and piles of clothes, emotional roller-coasters and the drama...oh my, the drama!

But as much as I enjoy watching beautiful models parade a designer's latest fashion collection, being backstage at a fashion show -where the magic happens- is just my favorite part.
The adrenaline rush that you experience from the fast changing, the smell of hair spray and the dilemma of a missing shoe is addictive!

Funny how you find yourself in the dust and concrete walls of a Runway fashion show's backstage (which is so crude, compared to the pristine white runway the public gets to experience) and yet it feels like you always belonged there.

I often wonder if the models feel the same way... I dare to guess they prefer the flashing attention of the photographers.

As for me, I keep wanting more and more; this drug-like addiction leaves you exhausted and yet exhilarated.

All the tension and the rushing, often resulting in models crying and designers frustration, is all lifted once the runway fashion show is over, the models' smiley faces leave the runway and the public exits the fashion venue heading down to the after-party.

The only things left then are a number of white chairs - no longer lined up in a meticulous row- a few people who stick around to network and a messy-messy backstage.
Now, the busy dressers are left scooping off the floor the designers' beautiful fashion pieces they so carefully steamed before the show; meanwhile, as all the workers sweep all the pieces of paper with the models' names and line-ups, the hair stylist pack up their hairspray, the Agency people celebrate by taking off their shoes and the designers pack their precious clothes into plastic bags!

A whole day of preparation, a whole month to put it together, a whole season of designing...all over in 20 minutes! Everything wrapped up by the media and the critics by either thumbs up or down!

The designers leave excited, hoping some big department store, or fancy boutique will now carry their line.
As for us, behind the scenes people, it's off to the next show.

It's a wonderful crazy world of its own, the "Fashion Show", and I feel blessed to be a part of it all.

It was a soiree organized specifically to support and fundraise for a great cause: the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Breast Cancer.

The Mixer was an absolute success!

Phoenix Fashion Week 2008

The 4th annual Phoenix Fashion Week is just a few weeks away and the city is already buzzing with excitement!

The Fashion event will take place on October 1st to 4th at the Royal Palms Resort (Oct. 1) and the Hayden Ferry Lakeside (Oct.2-4).

Phoenix Fashion Week 2007 was a success and organizers are expecting this year's 4 day event to be even bigger and better: 36 National and International Fashion Designers and 6 Accessories Designers will present Prêt-a-porter, Couture, Resort Collections, Luxury Sportsware, High Fashion Swimware and Fashionable Accessories.

On Oct.1 Phoenix Fashion Week will kick off at the Royal Palms Resort with the "Perfectly Pink" Fashion Show, in support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Man Style- through women's eyes

Ah men...sometimes they are a bit clueless when it comes to what women look for in a guy! Quite normal actually, since - according to author John Gray- we come from different planets!
It's important for every guy to know that we, ladies, pay attention to our man's style and grooming as much as our own. Our first impression of a man's appearance is very critical and superficial (sad but true), so know that the style you wear sends out a clear message. If you have ever experienced rejection on a first impression basis you need to know these basic facts. Here is a general directory of the messages we (ladies) might get through our first impression of a man's style.
First item the ladies notice is the clothing:
Modern, Crisp and Clean- well put together style= the man has his life together, he takes care of himself and will take care of his lady. He is independent, enjoys the finer things in life and is confident about his/our future together.
Shabby and wrinkled clothing = He just doesn't care, has no style, is very laid-back and may not have a job either. He doesn't know what he wants out of life and "can only offer me the now, not a solid future". May be commitment-phobic. He wants to have silly fun and probably prefers to have pizza on his stained couch with his buddies instead of taking his lady out for dinner! (Included in this category are Sweatsuits..out of the Gym of course).
Out of fashion/ ill-fitted clothes = His mother still picks his clothes or he tries too hard to be somebody he is not. He is insecure: doesn't know who he is and what he wants! He probably has a so-so job (a "yes" man), but he needs time to find himself by taking a good look at the surrounding world and find his place in it.
Then we notice the accessories:
Any watch? Digital...oh oh, bad! Keep the digital watches for the Gym...opt instead for a nice metallic watch (a heavy one), or a leather strap which sends out a message of classiness and power.
Shoes = with fringes?...oh oh, old man! Stick with a modern and fashionable style (regardless of your age), and match the shoes to the clothing style (classy shoes with classy clothes style and sporty shoes with sporty attires). When shopping ask for the lady/clerk's opinion - or two- on a suitable shoe style for you; when in doubt pick a simple style in a solid color (No rubber soles with suits or dress pants!!!) and keep the socks dark with no/or very faint print.
Wear a belt! A good-looking leather belt (no plastic please!!) that matches the pants color or in the color family of the other accessories is always stylish. Even with jeans, a belt can dress them up.
Glasses = No tape or cracked lenses! keep the frame modern; if the lenses are more than 5 years old, it's probably time to pick out new frames! Glasses can be classy and extremely sexy on a man, as long as the frame suits the face shape: Keep the frame opposite to your face shape, square frame styles on a round face shape and oval or rounded frame styles on a squared face or strong jaw line.
Jewelry: a thick metal chain necklace is a bit old-fashion, if you must do the chain, keep it thinner. Silver and leather necklaces with funky pendants are modern and stylish on men, especially when layered in odd numbers. A man's bracelet is also a stylish accessory: metal, leather, fabric are all a good choice, even layered.
We (ladies) are very picky about men's grooming:
Greasy un-kept hair = sends out the same message as shabby clothing...and he-hasn't-showered-in-days message. Take care of all your hair! Trim the annoying nose and ear hair (a huge distraction from the rest of your face). The chest hair is a personal thing with women, where some like it - some hate it...I personally don't mind a little patch (it's sexy!). Hair on the shoulders and back is a different story, it's just not sexy! More ware-wolfish!
As for leg hair on a man, I like it and cringe at the thought of a man's bare legs (but that's me!); I would leave it 'as is', unless the job or sport requires otherwise!
Facial hair can be sexy too, take Johnny Depp or Colin Farrell kept/un-kept goatees! Just take care of it and trim it to perfection to keep it stylish. A big grizzly beard is not very sexy, and sends out the "I don't care/live in a forest" attitude.
Hands and feet = we ALWAYS look at well kept nails. It's ok for a man to get a manicure (actually I recommend it), minus the nail polish of course! Get a pedicure as well, it's nice to see exfoliated skin through the sandals. Nobody wants to deal with foot odour! Visit a doctor if the toe nails have "color" (it's usually a sign that something inside you is not working properly). Funny tan lines are a no-no, like the golfer's ankles, sandals' feet or the farmer's tan, just pay attention in the sun!
Have a bright smile, bleach your teeth and visit a dentist often to have a healthy odor-free smile. For a kissable pout, gently exfoliate the lips with a soft toothbrush and Vaseline, then moisturize with Chap Stick.
Tattoos are a personal choice. I like a tattoo (or two) on a man, especially when it's not too visible through fancy clothing. The arm tattoo on a well defined bicep is enough to make any woman wander how 'bad' this boy really is. A chest or back tattoo is also hot, as long as it is tasteful or artistic. The thing with tattoos is: most women want a gentle but tough guy and tattoos often send out that message (same way as a motorcycle does!). I recently encountered a man with a nice arm tattoo peeking through his short sleeve T-shirt, cradleing his little two month old daughter...I had a melt down!
Attitude is important too: 'wear' an attitude of confidence (not arrogance), nobody wants a desperate man! Don't be too forward when approaching women, be casual and confident. Don't use pick-up lines (so cheesy), opt instead for a sincere compliment that makes a woman blush...not gag! Something on the line of: "Hi, I noticed you from across the room, I'm John" or "Hi, I don't think we met...I'm John", keep eye contact, smile, shake hands and wait for her response.
If she's with friends, focus your attention on her (don't introduce yourself to the whole group), she will introduce you to her friends after.
P.S. Make sure she looks single (No conspicuous rings or boyfriend nearby), and try to establish some eye contact (a couple of times) before you make your move, if she looks semi-interested already, you will avoid embarassing rejection.
But most of all be yourself, sport a smile and you will most likely be liked on the spot!

To sum it up: most women look for a stylish man who has his life together, takes good care of himself (body and soul). He has to be independent and show that he cares: a tough guy with a gentle soul.
Know that what you wear sends out a loud message of who you are, what you care about and your mode of living.
Well...now you know it, so no more excuses (or planet's accomodations)!

Why Personal Style?

Living in a fast paced world, where a multitude of interesting people compete for jobs, life companions, or just plain attention, there is a very small window of time to make a lasting impression. Let's face it, everyone wants to be remembered!
Personal Style is one of the first things people see and remember about the individuals they meet.
Further more, "Personal Style" is an outward expression of personality, beliefs and more specifically feelings.

"Style is primarily a matter of instinct" (Bill Blass)

Defining a person's "Personal Style" is not done as an attempt to categorize, or to set the individual into a trend style capsule, unable to grow and transform- it's actually the opposite!- it starts with a deep soul search to identify the individual's taste, true feelings and beliefs and then allowing the person to grow fashionably according to their specific taste.
There are some general categories for styles (projecting their own message): Classic, Dramatic, Eclectic, Bohemian, Romantic and so on, but these are descriptive, not restrictive! Interestingly enough, not two Personal Styles are the same!
Not all Bohemians are "Hippies!" However, through this clothing style we get a sense of the individual wanting to be free of conformities. The same goes with a Classic style, the neutral colors, well tailored pieces and a string of pearls sends out the message that this person enjoys the finer things in life.

Style is: "Accepting who you are and then going with it - which means know who you are, what you like, and what your assets are."

By not compromizing who we are, and falling into the glamorous trendy fashion traps, we can creatively express our feelings, emotions and beliefs through our clothing. It's extremely important to follow instincts, when it comes to Personal Style, however it's normal to feel confused and unsure. A Stylist (or Image Consultant) can help to find a personal style - not mold you to their own- by analyzing the lifestyle, likes and dislikes and most of all what fits the person's personality.
Let all the senses guide you to find a Personal Style, be true to it - no matter the trends, but most of all, don't become one of many; the great Coco Chanel once said: "Fashion fades, Style is Eternal"; dare to be memorable!

"Sex and the City: the Movie" Fashion

Last night, with a group of Fashionistas, I hit the movie theater to get my fashion fix! It was the new "Sex and the City" movie, of course!

A big aficionado of the "Sex and the City" series, I was reluctant and skeptical about a sequel to that... oh so perfect series finale. I gladly admit, however, to have been pleasantly surprised.
Not about to "kiss and tell," so don't expect me to give away the plot; I will reveal-all though, on the amazing fashions.

Already excited about the style-sense of the four "Sex and the City" heroines, I went in with a mission: To examine their fashion evolvement!

The movie (just like the series) is based on the lives of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, four friends with different personalities, careers and point-of-views and the struggles of their love lives in the magical and hectic New York City.

This time around, the "Sex and the City" (SATC) characters are older and wiser - since about 4 years have passed from the last time we saw them. It is clear then that their lives, like their fashion senses, have evolved. The movie also expands outside of their beloved New York City, showing the influence of another American fashion capital on their style. It is Samantha, of course, who ventures out of her city to Los Angeles, and her fashion choices become clearly disparate from the rest of the girls.

Samantha Jones (played by Kim Cattrall) is "bigger and bolder"- explains the desiner/stylist Patricia Field, in charge of the exciting movie fashions. The character has reached middle-life and some crisis is evident; her priorities have "somewhat" changed (as she tries to settle-down), but her fashion has only become more flamboyant.
By bigger, I assume, Patricia Field is referring to Samantha's shoulder pads. What a blast from the past! Most of her monochromatic bold-colored suits display 80's shoulder pads that rival football players'! Her taste in accessories has also grown...literally! Big bold rings, supersized hats, purses and sunglasses. It is borderline ridiculous at times, but it reflects very much Samantha's eccentric personality.

Dear sweet Charlotte York-Goldenblatt (played by Kristin Davis) has also grown, but more refined and confident. She is a mix of a Jackie O' and a 'Stepford Housewife'. She has groomed herself into a high class lady, with a calmer and softer attitude...there are some spurts of excitement however, throughout the movie, which bring back the"old" naive Charlotte to life!

Her fashionable style consists of classic pieces, neutral and pastel colors, some print and some minimal but bold accessories - mostly belts and oversized sunglasses.

Miranda Hobbes' fashion has mutated. She trades her sophisticated office-wear for polished city-wear. Miranda (played by Cynthia Nixon) has become more "Park Avenue", with bolder metallics, expensive designer dresses, and bolder prints. Ironically, she moved to the suburbs of the city!
Her lifestyle is still hectic, but her fashion has evolved to a very polished and crisp style.

Carrie Bradshaw's fashion choices are always a surprise. Her eclectic style has not changed, and the accessories grow bigger and bolder, as do the prints. There is still a softer, classy side to Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) that shines through in the movie, like her pearl necklace (that follows her even to bed) and her exquisite shoes- which she fancies as her "jewelry" of choice! Some of our "old" favourites pieces in her closet, like the fur coat and the ballerina dress, make a small cameo in the movie.

There were numerous gasps in the (mostly female) audience for the amazing fashion pieces and for "the closet" -you'll know when you see it!- even more so than for the excessive nudity and sex scenes..."we" girls, have our priorities figured out: "Hhhello Lllover!"

The SATC boys' wardrobe deserves a lot of credit too: they were all sharp looking and stylish. Mr.Big (played by Chris Noth) not only is bestowed a last name but also a über-crisp wardrobe, which reflects his executive lifestyle.

I thought the "Sex and the City" Movie was fantastic, the fashion exceptional and it swayed some SATC non-fans to rent the whole series!
Definitely a must-see movie and money well spent!

Cannes Red Carpet

The prestigious and world famous French film festival is not only a film director aspiration but is also a career boost for any actor. As for us fashionistas, Cannes is the place to show and watch fashion happen! From the strolls around town to film premiers and after-parties the festival is a continuous red carpet event and a back drop to the latest designers' fashions.

The 2008 Cannes Film Festival just wrapped up, leaving us with some memorable fashions on and off the red carpet.

The talk of town was 'Brangelina', and Angelina's blossoming figure. Angelina Jolie looked absolutely stunning in her tailored pieces, customized around her growing figure (she is pregnant with twins, and looking more radiant than ever.)

Angelina Jolie's casual looks consisted in a very pretty and simple white floral Thomas Wylde dress, and a custom Dolce & Gabbana black suit and T-shirt.

Angelina Jolie's red carpet look was, as usual, very elegant and so was Brad Pitt's. The moss green form-fitting gown from Max Azria Atelier is framed by beautiful gold and diamond Bulgari jewelry. The gray custom Reem Acra craftan is also very chic and tastefully adorned, although less form-fitting.

Another hot mama around the streets of Cannes is Cate Blanchett, whose form is enviable! - as she gave birth to a baby boy only 5 weeks prior to the festival. Stunning and original as usual in her fashion choices, she remains loyal to her favourite designers.

In her casual look Cate Blanchett is still very elegant: a floral short Kimono dress with modern and funky wedge heels. On the red carpet, Cate was stunning in Armani Privé gowns and Chopard jewels. I love her tanzanite necklace and Roger Vivier accessories framing the steel gray strapless gown.

Keeping on with the post pregnancy looks, another actress who was stunning at Cannes was Salma Hayek.

Salma Hayek looked beautiful and fresh on the red carpet in a strapless navy YSL gown and in a jade color Balenciaga dress. I'm not crazy about the third peacock-blue Gucci gown- I find it a bit severe and matronly- but I love her choice of Chopard jewelry for all her looks.
Radiant in all her appearances was juror Natalie Portman, who showed up to a multitude of events, and movie premiers.

Natalie Portman's well put together semi-casual black suit is made of a Lanvin jacket, Jenny Kayne shorts, fuchsia Rotter and Friends T-shirt, Te Casan heels and Tiffany & Co. jewelry -which she picks as the jewelry house of choice for all her appearances. I absolutely love her in this look: she is elegant, classy and modern at the same time. Afterwards Natalie hits the red carpet in a ruffled purple Lanvin dress and a vintage black Chanel Haute Couture gown.

She also chooses a couple of similar looks to hit movie premiers, short ruffled cocktail dresses from Lanvin. The choice of color is vibrant and youthful and suits her well.

Newly-wed Eva Longoria Parker shows solo but stunning at the Cannes' events.

Eva Longoria Parker's first cocktail mini-dress is a Zang Toi peacock feathered number -which is a nice change from the "usual" animal prints of the season. She follows with a short metallic Ferragamo backless dress and Kara Ross anaconda clutch. The gold metallic color suits her olive complexion beautifully.

Mrs. Eva Longoria Parker strolls around town in a cute yellow and white 60's inspired dress, topped by oversized shades and see-through bangles. Later that evening, Eva is red carpet worthy in a Mediterranean blue Versace Couture gown and train and Van Clef & Arpels jewels. She is old-Hollywood glamorous in a frothy tulle white Versace Atelier gown.

Elegant and stylish both on and off the red carpet Gwyneth Paltrow is always exciting to watch. In her first look she is wearing a shorter Celine dress, Burberry jewelry and her signature golden gladiators heels (which work with this look because the dress is simple and not over accessorized). She attends the Chopard party in a white Grecian-inspired one shoulder Lanvin dress, gladiator sandals and Chopard jewels. On the red carpet Gwyneth Paltrow wears a navy Chanel gown with a peek-a-boo plunging neckline and Chopard diamonds.

Casual Style: Kate Moss

In the ever-changing world of fashion, trends come and go quickly and, so do the celebrities who adopt them. A few gifted cutting edge Fashionistas however, avoid what the industry dictates and remain true to their style. Coco Chanel, Twiggy, Katharine Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Madonna are some of the Fashion Icons who, not only survived the test of time but, also will go down in history as stylish trend-setters. They don't follow trends, they make trends (and in some cases, revive them).

Among my favorite trend-setters is the über-stylish Kate Moss.

The 34 year old English supermodel, is credited for starting the Heroin chic style. With her controversial waifish figure and smaller stature, Kate Moss single handedly reshaped the fashion industry of the '90s.

Her personal style is highly influenced by Rock and Roll, and her mixed and matched favourite pieces have shaped the newest trends: black satin lapel Tuxedo jacket, thigh high black suede boots, vests and scarves. Lately she has also popularized trends such as: denim cutoff shorts, Ugg boots, ballet flats, pirates boots, skinny jeans, waistcoats, high-wasted styles and waist-cinching belts.

I admire her style, as she is always dressed very appropriately to the occasion. Kate can be extremely elegant in a designer gown on the red carpet, and the next day stroll around the streets of London in her fedora hat and ankle boots.

Kate's style is often demure, with monochromatic outfits and minimal jewelry, at the same time though, she plays with shapes and textures. Her clothes are curve hugging and her accessories oversized and texturized. She's often seen in gray or black skinny jeans tucked in her thigh-high suede boots, a skinny vest worn as a shirt, a big studded belt sitting low on her hips, a manly watch, a tote bag, big bold sunglasses (or Ray-Ban Aviators) and a large scarf wrapped around her neck. A true Rocker!

Kate rarely wears jewelry, makeup or coiffed locks, which makes her style seem natural and effortless.

Kate Moss' sense of style and trendsetting is highly appreciated in the world of fashion as she has become a muse to a multitude of designers and photographers. The admiration is not equally shared by the PETA group however, as she is a big fan of furs and leathers.

Aside from all the controversy, Kate Moss remains an inspiration and a strong influence to the world of fashion and is an international Iconic Figure who has written a chapter in fashion history.

How To Dress For Body Type

Styling Rules are hardly generic! As a matter of fact, they should always be customized to the individual! Since everyone comes in different body size and shape, it's important to learn what to wear and what to avoid in order to best flatter our body type. Being compared to an object like an Hourglass or a Pear is not always flattering, especially when carrying a few extra pounds that we are trying to lose. It can be hurtful to stand in front of a mirror and examine each flaw in order to determine our body type, but it is a necessary step.
Remember: no one has the "perfect" body!
I have met numerous women who are ready to reveal exactly what they don't like about their bodies, including models and celebrities!
It is extremely important to determine the body type - first and foremost- as it helps to visualize a certain shape; then, we choose what to wear to best suit our body type, to create the illusion of a well balanced figure.

The most important thing to analyze first is the body type we currently have (not the one we want): keep in mind that it has nothing to do with size, it's all about proportions.

All body types come in a mix of fuller and slimmer shapes. The most flattering body shape on a woman is the hourglass, so that is the ideal goal we should try to achieve through clothing, regardless of our current body type. It consists of: Larger shoulders, smaller well-defined waist and, a curvy bottom.

Let's determine firstly, the most common body types, then subdivide them (decide where you fit in best) and finally follow the simple styling steps to better balance the body type.

TOP HEAVY BODY TYPE:

The LOLLIPOP body type: Big breasts, not too broad shoulders, short waist and long skinny legs.

The GOBLET body type: Heavy and square on the top, large breasts, a big tummy and broad back sitting on slender legs.

BOTTOM HEAVY BODY TYPE:

The SKITTLE body type: top half is long and slim and widens at the bottom with saddlebags and a big bum on short legs.

The BELL body type: petite woman with small shoulders and breasts and a large bottom and waist.

The PEAR body type: small at the top with small shoulders and breasts, tiny waist, big thighs (saddlebags), and the calves and ankles don't have much definition.

TOP and BOTTOM HEAVY BODY TYPE:

The APPLE body type: is all round; small shoulders, big breasts and waist, big hips and buttocks and no definition in the calves and ankles.

The HOURGLASS body type: Big shoulders and breasts, small short waist, big hips (bottom half and top half are equal in size).

The VASE body type: It's a stretched Hourglass, more length and a flatter bottom.

The CELLO body type: broad shoulders, large breasts, very big buttocks, hips and thighs (bigger than the top).

NO CURVES/ ATHLETIC BODY TYPE:

The BRICK body type: it's a masculine shape, broad shoulders, flat buttocks, no waist line, straight up and down short legs.

The CONE body type: triangular shape, it's an athletic build with broad shoulders, little breast, no waist line, small hips and buttocks.

The COLUMN body type: very tall, statuesque build. No curves, the top half and bottom half are equal in size.

STYLE SOLUTIONS for EACH BODY TYPE:

TOP Heavy body types:

Goal: Pick pieces that are shaped but not tight. Bring attention to the bottom half of the body.

Purchase a well fitting bra first -more than 85% of North American women (regardless of their body type or bust size) wear the wrong size bra! Most stores offer a fitting session and service for free. Get it right, it makes the world of a difference in how the clothes fit.

Don't wear tops with: ruffles or pastel shades, thin spaghetti straps, delicate camisole tops or complicated necklines. Avoid high neck lines, opt instead for wide v-neck halves, not in a bulky material. Dresses should have strategic gathers under the breast to direct all eyes to your waist. Skirts should be fitted at the top and flaring at the hemline (to balance the top and the bottom), a cute tulip skirt works here. Avoid high waisted "anythings" at all cost! Bell bottom trousers balance out the breasts so you look less top heavy. Shoes should be high and a medium to slim heel to complement the shapely legs. Structured jackets, with one or two buttons under the breast, work well for a bigger bust, make sure the jacket can be buttoned; if a size bigger is necessary, then bring the jacket to the tailor and get both sides (at the waist) taken in, so to achieve an hourglass shape!

Don't Wear: A lot of women who have larger busts try to camouflage it with boxy blazers. A blazer hides a double-D bust, but it makes a waist and the rest of the body look much bigger as well. Remember we are trying to achieve an hourglass body type (not a brick!).

Do Wear: A fitted, single-breasted fitted blazer, making sure it defines the waist but is roomy enough in the bust so that it doesn't pull. The overall effect is slimming and shape-defining.

BOTTOM Heavy body types:

Goal: bring attention to the top half of the body and away from problem areas.

Clingy skirts and tapered pants are a no-no as they highlight the hip, so trow them out of the closet; fuller leg trousers and flared skirts hide bulges. Wear any vertical pattern on the bottom half (to slim the appearance) even if it is in the seaming. Darker colors recede, so go dark on the bottom half of the body (no shiny fabrics) and wear lighter colors on top. To broaden shoulders and bring the attention up to the top half, wear big lapels, color and embellishment on the neckline, even a small shoulder pad will bring balance to a wider bottom.

Avoid side pockets, opt instead for a flat-front trouser. Super-slim jeans and pencil skirts are not a good choice. A defined waist, full skirt and strapless cut dress will bring all the focus to the smaller upper half. High-waisted, belted skirts draw attention to a slimmer waist line (hem it just above the knee), but wear them only if you have smaller breasts. Avoid Empire waist dresses that hide the waistline, choose instead a defined waist and an A-line skirt (wrap dress) to accentuate the upper half. Buy a full, pleated Knee-length skirt to conceal a wide hip. Full, wide-leg gauchos drape without clinging and are a fashionable choice. Avoid tapered cut pants that emphasize a wide middle area, try a boot-cut pant and jeans to create a straight, lean line. Pleats are dangerous and so are too-high waist lines on pants, a flat front trouser on a medium rise (1 inch below belly button) is more flattering on this body type.

A funnel shaped coat (buttons on the top half) is very flattering, also a coat with belt will bring attention to the waist, like a classy trench coat. In the summer wear a thigh-skimming Craftan over the bathing suit, it's a classy and fashionable way to cover up and balance a wider hip.

Cone heels on a dressy shoe will help balance out the bottom half of the body. Straight winter boots will look fashionable and also help cover shapeless calves and ankles. Don't do ankle straps, they brake the line of the leg.

Don't Wear: A straight button-dress that hugs the curves at the hips, making them appear larger, not to mention the pull on the buttons in curvy areas can draw unwanted attention.

Do Wear: A wrap dress to emphasize the smallest part of the body (the upper half), allowing the bottom to A-line over the rest, camouflaging large hips and thighs. A print, especially over a darker background is slimming and will diffuse the attention on the pattern, not on the curves.

TOP and BOTTOM Heavy body types:

Goal: The secret is not to hide any part of the body, but to show it off, nobody looks good in a straight oversized tent dress. The clothes must be fitted (not tight) and curve hugging.

Wear V-neck fitted cardigans, scooped necks and pencil skirts. Skirts should be fastened on the side and flat-fronted, to avoid extra bulk. Sewn down paneling on the top half of a bottom-pleated skirt holds the tummy at the front and cuts the buttocks in half. Asymmetric pleats on a tulip skirt will lift and bring out the bottom. Wear jackets with a single button (which will emphasize the narrowest area of the body). Traditional jeans don't always work, so choose a tailored, wide legged denim trouser. Avoid tight, wide-cut pants, which can make the bottom look wider; a straighter leg style (full but not flared), that doesn't pull at the hips, is more flattering. Avoid pleats around the hips and belly (they add bulk) or anything high-waisted. Wear waist defining pieces and empire-waist dresses. A fitted trench with belt is great as a coat. Pick chiffon dresses, with a corset. As for shoes, avoid stilettos, curvy girls need curvy shoes! Choose a small, shaped wedge sandal, and a rounded or peep toe shoe.

No CURVES body types:

Goal: Create curves and an ideal hourglass shape.

Draping dresses with patterns will create curves in all the right places (size the pattern to the body- small frame= small pattern, and vice versa). Don't assume any bra with padding will work; it must fit so the seams and padding can't be seen (P.S. Avoid deep Vee shirts with padded bras). Never go bra-less under flimsy fabrics, no matter how small the breast, it's not classy.

A feminine chiffon dress will soften the shape. Halter tops create soft curves. Gathering and pleating on a shirt (at the sleeves and waist) creates curves. Skinny jeans will hug the skinny shapeless hips, giving them more definition. Choose delicate heels to highlight slim ankles. Accessorize, to keep you looking very stylish and feminine (use lace, beads and other feminine detailing). Invest in some cute waist-defining belts to wear over shirts, cardigans, coats, etc.

"Accentuate your best features and disguise what you are not so happy with. Choose outfits that fit and make you look comfortable rather than those that are up-to-the-minute."

Now that you know what to wear, a few last minute tid-bits of advice: Practice the art of camouflage. A well known fashion truth: darker colors minimize, while lighter or shiny ones highlight. To play down a large chest, avoid wearing bright metallic tops. Have a thicker waist? A dark brown belt is better than a white one. Horizontal stripes make anything look wider. To look taller and leaner wear monocromatic tops and bottoms (match shoes to trousers for a longer leg line). To do color safely, accessorize!

Everyone needs a Tailor: it's unrealistic to expect every size 12 dress to fit every size 12 woman in the bust, waist and hips perfectly. That means find a reliable tailor so that the clothes fit your body. Good tailoring can make a cheaper item look expensive.
Styling Dos and Don'ts have nothing to do with size. These days, flattering choices abound for women of all shapes. Love your body, be stylish and confident, it shows that you appreciate and respect yourself.

How to Care for Fabrics and Jewelry

When we purchase an expensive item, whether it's a jacket in a fancy fabric or a precious piece of jewelry, we want to keep them new and clean as long as possible. Here is a guide to how to care for these special items.

Suede: The best way to take care of suede is to spray it (when first purchased and then at least once a month with a protective spray). Yes, it's the spray that the sales' person is pushing you to buy... consider it like a scotch-guard for your jacket against the skin's natural oils. Make sure to spray the collar and the sleeves (on the wrists too) on a jacket. Then brush the suede piece after each wearing using a wire-bristled suede brush. This will keep the finish looking bright and clean.

Leather: Anything in leather (shoes, purses, jackets, etc.) can be a costly item and deserves careful attention. Take care of precious leather pieces by polishing them at least once a month. To maintain fine leather suppleness and shine, Meltonian Cream is recommended; it hides scuff marks and it will shine better than spay-on polishes. For hard-wearing leathers like boots and winter shoes, a wax polish is better (highly water resistant). For water resistance, mink oil works too, however be careful, since the oil darkens the look of the leather a few shades, as it gets absorbed. Before polishing any shoes, clean all dirt using a soft brush and a flannel cloth to dust them . Lightly sponge marks on metallic -or lightly colored- leather, with a damp cloth dipped in soapy water. Let the spots dry naturally (if shoes-preferably on a shoe tree), then work a small amount of cream polish in circular motion. To ensure an even distribution use a shoe tree or your hand inside the leather piece. After the polish, bring up the best shine rubbing a genuine chamois cloth on it.
Shoes- Don't wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row; they need a day to dry and air out. During the winter season, shoes and boots absorb a lot of moisture from the feet; keep them smelling fresh by wiping the inside using a cloth dipped in warm water and a few drops of Ammonia. Never, ever, place any leather or suede items near a radiator to dry, they will crack!

Crocodile and Lizard: these skins are tough and need very little care and maintanance, however they should be carefully dusted with a flannel cloth after each use. Never polish Lizard skin (shoes or purses), just wipe the item with a damp cloth when dirty. Crocodile requires an application of neutral cream occasionally.

Wool and Knits: Dry clean all items sporting a dry cleaning tag! Simple enough (right??) however, many people attempt a time/money-saving at-home care treatment, ruining their expensive item in the end. Trust the label, it will ensure the longevity of the wools and knits, especially Cashmere.
Do not Dry Clean any wool/knit gloves, scarves, socks, hats and shawls; the chemicals used to dry clean can actually weaken the fibers of these items, wearing them out prematurely. Hand Wash these wool and knits in cold water, then press the item between two clean towels to absorb most water. Never wring the water out, as it will stretch the fabric out of shape. Place the item on a dry towel - away from a heat source- and let air dry.

Pantyhose: Always wash pantyhose by hand and in a delicate soap and water solution. Rinse well and hang to dry; wringing the water out of the pantyhose will stretch the delicate material and ruin its shape. If a snag appears, use some clear nail polish to stop the run, and let dry; re-use the snagged pantyhose under a pair of pants or a long skirt.

Eyeglasses: Just like jewelry, eyeglasses can be an long time investment, if properly cared for.
Wash glasses at least once a day in some mild soap and water. wipe the glasses using with a microfiber cloth, or linen towel (reserved specifically for the glasses). On some oily skin, the glasses can get a little greasy by the end of the day, spray the glasses with an ammonia-based cleaner before washing them in soapy water. Always carry the glasses in a hard case to avoid minor shocks and scratches. Take care of the little maintanance, like tightening the screws, to make the glasses more comfortable and last longer.

Pearls: Real pearls are precious and therefore costly; it's impotant to take really good care of this piece of jewelry. Genuine pearls feel cooler to the touch than fake ones, to test their authenticity, rub a pearl over your teeth, if it grates, it's real, while if it's smooth, it's imitation.
Some of the best imitations out there are "Majorica" pearls.
Leave real, cultured pearls out to "breathe" when you are not wearing them. Airing the pearls will deepen the lustre. Pearls are porous, so they will absorb the skin's natural oils, making them grow more lustrous with every wear. Absolutely never spray perfume on the pearls, it will dull the surface.

Gold: Gold is a very popular precious metal (the higher the Karat the more pure it is and therefore softer), and with proper care it can last a long time. Always remove gold jewelry before exercising or prior to any kind of physical work. Polish the gold jewelry often using a jeweler's cloth (chemically treated especially for that purpose), which is available at most jewelry shops or craft stores. Store gold jewelry in a cotton-lined box or in a flannel bag to prevent it from tarnishing.

Silver: To keep the silver jewelry looking its brightest, care for it by polishing each piece often with silver polish and a flannel cloth (or a jeweler's cloth). Never use an abradant cleanser on silver jewelry, or it will scratch and dull the surface.

Weight Loss: How to Lose Weight and Keep it Off

It's an age-old question: How do you lose weight and keep it off?
With all the Diets, Special Foods and Weight Loss Systems out there, it's no wonder that most overweight people are so confused about weight loss. Losing those extra inches and pounds can be a frustrating experience, and since it requires a long term commitment and offers delayed results, most people give up easily, feeling like it's a lost cause. Well, I'm here -living proof- to tell you that losing weight and keeping it off can be done!
I am not a phisician, or an expert in the matter, however I lived through it; this article is a recommendation based on my weight loss success (and also my husband's, some family members' and friends'), and is also founded on the advice I received from a doctor.
Warning: please, contact your doctor -especially if suffering from any medical problem- before following any weight loss Diet or weight loss Exercise advice.

After a careless sweets-filled diet during pregnancy, I found myself 60 pounds overweight (a lot for a small frame), and not being able to breastfeed, I had a hard time getting back in shape. I wasn't willing to settle for the new heavy-set body, so I started a hard core search for the best weight loss program to shed the fat and keep it off, and researched many diet books and on-line weight loss sources. Being hard-headed finally worked for me, as I finally found answers from a doctor (friend of mine), who directed me to a 3 step program for weight loss: A Healthy Balanced Diet, Exercise and CLA.

DIET: It is important for our health to keep our body lean and fit, in the words of Arnold H. Glasgow:

"Your body is the baggage you must carry through life. The more excess the baggage, the shorter the trip"

So have a healthy diet. I cringe at that word, only because I've tried almost every "diet" under the sun! So you can imagine the 'excitement' as the doctor started talking. The best things about his weight loss diet: it's for every healthy member of the family, it is a long term habit and it doesn't require cooking tasteless foods or buying expensive special-cooked meals/foods.
The Doc told me: "the secret of a healthy balanced diet is in your hand! We have 5 fingers, that's the number of meals to eat during the day: 3 main ones and 2 snacks. Look at the palm of your hand, that is the size of 'protein' serving (beef, chicken, turkey, pork, fish)"; I know some of you are staring at your palm saying: "what? I will starve!" trust me on this one, you won't!
He continued: "Make a fist now, that is the size of Carbohydrates or Starch (pasta, bread, potatoes, rice...etc.) beside the 'meat', and accompany that by 2 fists of Vegetables (keep them colorful and dark greens)... and NO, fried french fries don't qualify! A great Snack is a handful of nuts".
The trick in a weight loss diet is finding a healthy balance between Carbohydrates and Proteins. The best ratio is 2:1, so for every 2 grams of Carbohydrates in a meal, have 1 gram of Protein. The doctor explained: "when the ratio is balanced, Insuline is not produced in the body and fat storage doesn't take place". So pair the morning toast (cereal, pancakes, cookies..any carbs) with a tall glass of milk, peanut butter or an egg (protein).

Learn to read the labels on the products we buy. Most products, have a "Nutrition Fact" label on the box; Calories are important, as the recommended amount of daily intake is limited:
Healthy women of average height/built have a limit of about 1500/day, and the average healthy male has a limit of 2200 calories/day (if smaller in size decrease the number of calories by about 200/300, if bigger increase the allowance).

Important: A woman should never eat less than 1200 and a man never less than 2000 calories to remain healthy: healthy weight loss= healthy eating.
During a pregnancy a healthy woman should add 300 extra calories and during lactating an extra 500 calories to her regular daily intake.

Figure out the RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate), the amount of calories the body burns without exercise:
In pounds and inches:

Men: RMR = (4.54 x Weight in pounds) + (2.44 x Height in inches) – (4.92 x Age) + 5
Women: RMR = (4.54 x Weight in pounds) + (2.44 x Height in inches) – (4.92 x Age) - 161

In kilograms and centimeters:

Men: RMR = (9.99 x Weight in kg) + (6.25 x Height in cm) + (4.92 x Age) + 5
Women: RMR = (9.99 x Weight in kg) + (6.25 x Height in cm) + (4.92 x Age) - 161

Next, multiply the RMR by an Activity Coefficient (AC). Here are the average ACs for men and women.
Sedentary Men: AC = 1.55 -Moderately Active Men: AC = 1.78 -Very Active Men: AC = 2.10
Sedentary Women: AC = 1.56 -Moderately Active Women: AC = 1.64 -Very Active Women: AC = 1.82
That's the number of calories the body burns per day -without extra exercise.

Next on the Nutrition Fact Label is the FAT, this figure should't exceed 6 grams, to be considered "healthy"; anything more will settle in, contributing to the 'extra' inches and resulting in time in an overweight body and fatty organs.
Be careful: not all fat is equal! Some fats are good, like Fish oils (Omega 3, Omega 6) and very healthy, while others (Trans-fats) are artery cloggers!
Keep the Sodium at or below 350 grams and the Salt at less than 2000 mg.
Helpful tip: For flavour without the added fat, marinate the meat, poultry and fish: Garlic, Basil, Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Lemon juice and a bit of olive oil before putting it on the Barbeque; the marinade will add flavour and counteract the formation of Carcinogens during the roasting (which can cause breast and colon cancer).
The best thing when dieting is to avoid most sugary/high calories drinks, like sodas, juices and beers, they are not a necessity in a daily meal and just contribute to chew up the calorie and sugar allowance for the day; but don't deprive yourself all the time. ONE glass of red wine, even though it contains sugars, is healthy for the heart and circulatory system. Drink a lot of water during the day, it will cleanse and purify the body from harmful toxins, resulting in clearer skin and well functioning organs.
Helpful tip: to remember to drink -especially during my weight loss program- I carried a small (hard plastic) water bottle with me all day.

Stay away from fancy sauces and fatty condiments like: mayonaise, heavy salad dressings, butters..etc. A healthy substitute is mustard. Avoid all fried foods; use the oven as a substitute to the frying pan (for fries, nuggets, cutlets, etc.), and the Grill/BBQ is a great friend to any diet. Grill the fish, meats, poultry and vegetables. After you grill (or steam the vegetables) keep them tasty the Mediterranean way: olive oil, herbs, herbs, more herbs, garlic and citrus! Try this: mix in a small bowl a bit of extra-vergin olive oil (quantity depends on the amount of food), add a few teaspoons of lemon juice, oregano, fresh parsley and basil, a clove of garlic (cut in very small dices), and a pinch of salt, then mix it up; drizzle the mix onto the grilled/steamed vegetables and fish/meat. It's so delicious, that it doesn' t feel like "diet" food! I love it on my salmon, shrimp, mushroom, eggplant, zucchini, etc.
Dessert is ok too, but in moderation though, and if it doesn't throw the whole daily calories and fat allowance out of balance.

EXERCISE: like the diet in a weight loss program, a crucial part to lose weight is based on consistent exercise and getting the blood flowing. Just reducing the amount of calories intake won't decrease the weight already accumulated, so get moving! The gym is not the only place to lose weight...why spend the money and waste the trip if you don't have to! Just set aside about 30 minutes a day to get moving -make it a priority, the time slot will "magically" appear! The daytime is the best time to get moving, don't leave exercising for the evening or it might disrupt the sleeping pattern.
Exercise will burn the calories, and in time it will help speed up the metabolism, which in turn will accelerate the weight loss.
If not an exercise expert (who is?), don't worry; just get moving: running on the spot (before getting into the shower), or going up and down the stairs a few times in a row (can be done at work). The best aerobic exercise for burning calories is alternating fast motions with slower ones, so running on the spot and walking, or rushing up the stairs and then slowing down.
To work the whole body, grab small weights for the arms (to just tone up, two small bottles of water will do). A personal favourite, on the weekend, is aerobic exercises to music: Spanish tunes always get the hips moving and the blood pumping.
It's important to stretch before and after the exercise regimen; try to get moving the day after too, especially if sore (moving again will make the sore-spots disappear).
Caution: When starting to exercise, weight loss might take place on any part of the body (like the hands or face...etc), that's why it takes time to see significant results -same with dieting- losing weight just takes time.

CLA: It was suggested by the Doc, in addition to the diet and exercise to add 2 capsules of 500mg of CLA to a daily routine, and I believe is that it is the best supplement for weight loss while exercising. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (from Safflower Oil) is a fatty acid that also occurs naturally, and in small quantities, in foods like meats and dairy products. CLA works by reducing body fat, supporting lean body muscle retention and making the most out of the workout. Pick one brand that carries at least 500mg of the CLA/capsule and is 100% Pure Safflower Oil; there are many brands out there (at every cost) but chose one with very little or no fillers. Celebrate every little progress, stay consistent and keep the spirit up...it works, I am living proof. I'm in my thirties now, and my body has never looked more trim and fit.

How to Apply False Eyelashes

This article was inspired by the incredible amount of requests (e-mails) from you readers on the topic, keep the questions coming by asking on the Forum.

One of the best kept secret (no longer so) of the Hollywood Movie Stars and glamorous sexy glares is false eyelashes. From syntetic, to real, to mink hair, and single strands to a full set, there are many kinds to choose from, and many movie stars (some of them men) swear by them and won't do without. Believe it or not, false eyelashes were invented by movie director D.W.Griffith to add drama to actress Seena Owen's eyes, in 1916!
I personally, have been blessed with long dark eyelashes from birth (good genes), but still can't help to apply my favourite set of "fake" eyelashes to give my eyes some more drama.

The first thing to do is decide what look you prefer; to get a glamorous stare choose a full set of eyelashes (not too long, stick with your regular lashes length or just a tad longer), to give just a bit of dept, opt instead for the small clasps or individual lashes. Choose the color, black lashes add more drama, while brown is more of a day time look and are more natural looking on people with lighter complexions and hair.

Buy the glue specifically designed for false eyelashes, no substitutes here, as you can damage the eyes with harsh chemicals or even pull the real eyelashes! Buy the dark glue (looks grey but dries black) for a more natural look and to avoid eyeliners.

The application of these beauty enhancers can, however, be a bit tricky and needs a bit of practice: have a set of wide tweezers to help and a flat-end toothpick to apply the glue.

Lay the dry false eyelashes against the real lash line to determine the perfect lenght. Clip a few strands at both end to make them look more natural and to avoid them pulling at the eyes.
Apply a thin line on glue on the base of the false lashes, let it sit for a few seconds, then in front of a mirror, lay the lashes on slowly, setting the middle part first then the sides, as close to the lash line as possible. This application is the tricky part and needs a bit of practice before mastering the technique. If you choose the cluster eyelashes, about 7 or 8 strands (1 to 2 millimiters apart) will give a full natural look.

After laying the false eyelashes, wait a few seconds, then push them up towards the eyelid, so that they will dry above the regular lashes; this trick will actually replace the use of eyelash curlers. Once they are dry (upwards), apply the mascara by wiggling the wand at the roots of the lashes ans pulling the wand up; Mascara will attach the real lashes to the false ones and will give it extra hold, do two coats of mascara if you prefer. Make sure to bring the little tube of eyelash glue and a flat-end toothpick out with you in case the (individual) eyelashes fall off or the strand comes off at the corners (natural skin oils might loosen the glue after a few hours), just dab a bit of eyelash glue with the toothpick on the false lashes and set them back by holding on to the ends for a few seconds. It has happened to me, where my individual lash was sitting on my cheek for most of the night (I opted for no mascara that night)...I noticed when I got home...sigh! So check from time to time!
To take them off at the end of the day, just pull on one end of the false eyelash gently, it should come off without struggles. Remove all excess glue from the false eyelashes, to keep them looking good, and remove the mascara as well by dabbing them with a cotton ball and eye makeup remover. Eye makeup remover should also get rid of any small bits of glue left on the real lashes gently (don't try to pull the glue off with fingers or tweezers, might pull real lashes as well). The life-span of your false eyelashes depends on the quality and care of the lashes...usually syntetic and real hair lashes will last about 2 weeks of use (looking newer), after a while they might loose their shape or have some built up glue and makeup. Replace when necessary to have the best results. My favourite false eyelashes that last the longest and resemble the very beautiful and expensive mink kind (which are the only choice for most celebrities) are the Shu Uemura which can be found at StrawberryNet (follow the link to access the site for incredible discounts).

Swimsuits for every Body Type

Shopping for a Swimsuit is dreaded by most women and can be a frustrating experience if not done properly. In Erma Bombeck's words: "People shop for a bathing suit with more care than they do a husband or wife. The rules are the same: Look for something you'll feel comfortable wearing. Allow for room to grow."
Just the thought of having to parade around a beach, exposing most of the body's flaws is nerve-racking especially when we log around a few extra pounds, and leaves the swimsuit shopping trip at the bottom of the list of things to do.

Why swimsuits are in such demand
They're soggy and damp,
Bind like a clamp,
And hold about three pounds of sand!"

The right swimsuit, however, just like clothing, with proper fit, pattern, color and detailing can do wanders!
Here are a few guidelines to the best swimsuit fit for each body type, don't forget though to experiment and try different styles on, in different colors and patterns.
Remember a few basics: Darker colors and matte fabrics swimsuit are great on areas you want to slim down. A bright color swimsuit with dark piping or side insets can have a slimming effect.
Carefully sized and placed prints on a dark background swimsuit can be slimming as well.

For Curvy body types: A full body bathing suit is most flattering; try wrap styles and all over pattern. To bring attention to a small waist, wear a swimsuit with a belt, chevron patterns, mesh insets or diagonal lines. For the best shape try halter neck line bathing suit and make sure there is enough support in the bust. High cut leg holes enlongate the legs and are slimming.

For Top Heavy body types: it is important to look for a swimsuit with support to the bust; try a two piece bathing suit, and choose a top with built in cups or underwire support and wider straps. Fabrics in high Lycra content are excellent for hold, look for densely woven fabrics. A halter neckline is the most flattering; avoid it however, if you have broad shoulders, opt instead for V-necks or scoop necklines. Buy a swimsuit that draws attention downwards, do details like ruffles and shirring. Dark solid colors on top and brighter on the bottom bring attention down and balance out the figure.

For Bottom Heavy body types: Bring attention upwards to the bust with a lighter color, a V-neck and detail on the top half. Keep the bottom half in dark matte colors to minimize. Strapless and empire waist bathing suits also work in balancing out the figure. Side shirring and darker side pannels sculpt by taking inches off and minimizing the bottom half. The skirted swimsuit is not a good option for this body type, as it adds bulk, brings attention down and (contrary to popular belief) doesn't cover problem areas. A higher cut leg hole bathing suit is a better choice as it gives the illusion of a longer leg and leaner bottom.

For Small Busts: String bikinis work best for this body type; push-up and small padding enhance the bust (avoid big obvoius padding). Look for lower necklines, bright colors and detailing to give the illusion of a bigger bust.

For Tummy control: Swimsuits with vertical lines, like piping, seaming and V-necks to bring the attention away from the tummy area and enlongate the figure. Keep the bright lighter color at the top and the darker matte color at the bottom. In a two piece bathing suit, look for a higher waistband bottom, and a high content of Lycra for added support. Avoid all horizontal prints and cuts on the swimsuit.

There a few actors in the Hollywood scene, who choose to remain true to themselves; they let their talent shine on the screen and do not rely exclusively on their -so admired- good looks.

I am extremely fashinated by such actors because they carry their sense of self in their daily fashion style and to the Red Carpet: these movie stars play with the glamour concept, showing a keen sense of humor.

There are way too many actors who take their role as a "Hot Babe" and "Sex Symbol" too seriously and, even choose movie roles based solely on their good looks; this is not the case with extremely talented actors such as Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortensen.

Who can forget the oversized 40's inspired suits that Johnny Depp sported on the Red Carpet?!

The new name on everyone mouth for his Red Carpet extravagances is Viggo Mortensen. There is no denying his good looks and charm, however he does not play many romantic Prince Charming roles!

Who can forget him as the incredibly dreamy Aragorn from Lord of the Rings!? Who kept the audience going back to the theater for the sequels.

The man is as talented as he is goodlooking, his latest movie earned him an Oscar nomination, even though I believe that many fashion "gurus" just wait to see what he will wear next. The Dane actor/poet has so much fun with his fashion that in the latest appearance at the Oscar's he even helped design his outfit.

Criticized by many, Viggo is misunderstood! It would be so easy to dress his lean and fit body in any designer tuxedo and get in any "Red Carpet Glamorous" lists, but I admire his courage to step outside the "black tuxedo" mold, and express his poetic/romantic side through his clothes. Unfortunately not many can see the humor in "not taking yourself too seriously"; only few people decide to step outside the "obvious-glamour-box", by expressing their emotions, literally, on their sleeves, and should be applauded for it. It's a puzzle to me how people might appreciate the wacky creations of some fashion designers, at an "over-the-top" haute couture fashion show and at the same time, the same critics, are ready to "crucify" a Movie Star for taking the same chances.

I often wonder if there are others -like me-who can see the romantic expressions behind some fashion creations, which sets these stars aside from the fashion disasters? Why is it so hard to see the clear difference between a "wanna-be-star" fashion mess-up and a stylish fashion statement? I see Viggo Mortensen as a "Statement Maker"- a funny guy who doesn't take himself too seriously- and the talented handsome person/movie star he is!

Maternity Clothes and Style

Pregnancy is one of the happiest times in a woman's life, but also one of the most frustrating to dress. Many women, myself included, are a bit overwhelmed when it comes to remain stylish during the maternity period. It's not easy to see the body go through a big change (in a small amount of time) and is frustrating to figure out how to dress a whole new body (especially on a budget). It is, however, a wonderful time in a woman's life and it should be embraced, so to help with the frustration, here are a few suggestions to maternity fashion that will leave you looking stylish and won't break the bank.
First of all, try to wear your regular clothes as long as possible. I know it's hard, given the excitement, but 40 weeks is a long time to mix and match the few maternity items you will purchase. The body will swell a bit during the first trimester, however, most women don't need pregnancy wear until the second trimester; also the third trimester might need larger and longer maternity clothing, so don't spend all your cash on your first shopping trip.
Second, it is very important to remain stylish! Pregnancy causes many changes to the mood (from all the surging hormones) as well, and the best thing to lift the spirit is to dress up, and look gorgeous.
Buy pregnancy clothes that reflect your style and try to find some fun interesting pieces.
Look for fabrics that are comfortable and allow the skin to stretch with ease. The skin is more sensitive during pregnancy and hot flashes might be common, so avoid bulky clothes and itchy fabrics. Invest in cotton, silk and Lycra blends.

Nobody does maternity fashion clothes like the Gap!

The most important word to remember is: comfort. That doesn't mean wear PJs all day, but to shop for comfortable fabrics and fits.

Gap maternity clothes are not only super comfortable and stylish but they are also economical. Do not follow into the trap of shopping for plus sizes clothes...you are pregnant, not a plus size!
Maternity clothes should fit like regular clothes, and you will often shop for your regular size in maternity wear. The maternity shirts are built to hug the new curves and are built longer to cover the new belly curve. Start by buying fashionable maternity basics first: Jeans, pants, skirt, T-shirt, dressy top and a dress.

Make sure the colors of the maternity clothes mix and match, stay neutral on bottom pieces. Monochromatic is the most slimming; dress in one color to achieve this look but have fun with colorful jewelry and scarves. After the basic clothes are taken care of, then add more tops or outerwear to your likes. If shopping for the winter fashion, should invest in a good coat, to cover all the stages of maternity. To keep the maternity clothes from getting boring and repetitive, invest in some stylish accessories, like a cute metallic belt, hats, scarves, sunglasses, and jewelry. Just changing the accessories can make clothes seem new and fresh. Get stylish comfortable shoes...it's a must!
Have fun buying maternity jeans, do a flare, to keep the figure balanced, or the very popular boot-cut; I loved my Donovan maternity jeans, they were so chic and comfortable, I didn't want to put them away...actually, I wore them for a while after the baby was born.

Dress up a plain maternity T-shirt with a metallic belt over the hips, a cuff bracelet and some hoop earrings, just have fun and let the happiness of the inside shine on the outside.

The maternity T-shirts from the Gap are just great (even when you are truly showing) with a high quality stretch jersey, which will stay true to its fit and color wash after wash.

Get a V neck, which is flattering on every body type. Dress the T-shirt up adding a small maternity cropped cardigan, which is stylish and will keep you warm.

Bring all the attention to the belly, a pretty top, a belt or a wrap shirt closing in the front will look fabulous. Remember to keep prints in scale to the size of the body, and watch out for horizontal vertical and diagonal lines, make sure they work well: a big stripe across the chest or shoulder might flatter by giving the illusion of a bigger chest or shoulders. Sometimes widely spaced horizontal lines can add lenght to the figure, but most of the time horizontal lines only add width. Don't do tight garments with any lines, or you will wear squiggles! Just like regular fashion wear, maternity clothes should be chosen keeping in mind your best features.

Beautiful legs: buy skirts, shorts, and nice wedge shoes to bring attention to the legs.
Nice arms: buy short sleeves shirts with details, to bring the attention up to the upper body. Nice face: put the color on the upper part of the body to bring all the attention to the face and do pretty details on the neck line, like scarves, necklaces or chandelier earrings.

Make sure to buy new maternity intimates as well, clothes fit best with the proper support. Panties need to be comfortable and able to stretch with the growing curves; bras will also change a few sizes, try on different shapes and fits, to make sure it is comfortable and supportive (they are not all alike). You will need at least a new bra for the first trimester and one in the third (it is not uncommon for the breast to grow 2 or more sizes, in cup and band size). Buy a comfortable fit for the after-birth, when breasts might be sore, enlarged and extremely sensitive, avoid underwire if you can but keep good hold to avoid stretching.
Be ready to have transition clothes for those days following the birth; wear comfortable and breathable fabrics which won't irritate the baby skin, can't go wrong with cotton (wash all the new clothes to get rid of its original starches). Remember, it takes about 10 months to put on the weight and about the same amount of time (if not more) to get rid of it, do it slowly and in a healthy manner (need the energy to look after the new bundle of joy).

Oscar's 2008: Red Carpet Best and Worst Dressed

The 80th annual Oscar Award Ceremony wrapped up last night, February 24 2008, leaving us with some exceptional movies and memorable Red Carpet fashion.

The predominant colors among the ladies gowns were red and black, while the guys were classy and glamorous in their black and blue tuxedos.

Red was definitely a preference this year, among the ladies, who still maintain the old Hollywood mivie star glamour, with their soft hair and makeup, long trains and diamond jewelry.

Heidi Klum is wearing a gorgeous custom made John Galliano Haute Couture red silk taffeta bustier gown, pink earrings and bag. Lots of drama around the neck and accented by a high bun hairdo. Anne Hathaway is sweet and simple in an elegant red Marchesa gown and lots of rose details on the one-shoulder strap and Harry Winston earrings. Katherine Heigl also opted for red in a fabulous silk georgette Escada column, one-shoulder strap and pleated bodice gown , which she wore with a red lip and retro hairstyle.

Myley Cyrus looks so beautiful and age-appropriate in a red chiffon Valentino gown and small bow detail (at the back), chandelier earrings and a bronze lizard clutch with Swarovski crystals by Mary Norton and Sergio Rossi shoes; her hair is soft and her makeup delicate. Helen Mirren is beautiful in a garnet red satin gown by Georges Chaakra, love the Swarovski crystal drop sleeves and back detail. Julie Christie is also classy in a shorter custom designed red dress by her stylist Tanya Gill; I'm not too crazy about the pink organza gloves though.

Ruby Dee looked stunning and so vibrant and youthful in her bright red Kevan Hall long satin gown, belt and short jacket. Perfect for her short hairstyle and natural makeup. Love the silver bag as an accent, which recalls the buckle on her belt.

Here are the pregnant beauties of Hollywood: Angelina Jolie who did not show up on the Oscar's Red Carpet is surely showing something else (photo from the Indipendent Spirit Awards)! Radiant Nicole Kidman is not showing much of a baby bump and wore a shapeless black Balenciaga gown and a big L'Wren Scott 3 strands necklace; not my favourite of the movie star's looks, loved her Chanel Beaute makeup and beautiful soft hairdo. Cate Blanchett is gorgeous in a purple Dries Van Noten gown, jeweled necklace (a big oversized) and the jewels by Lorraine Schwartz; admire her courage to show up in 4 inches heels. Another beautiful and radiant Oscar's Red Carpet beauty is Jessica Alba who wore a plum strapless Marchesa gown with feather details on the bodice and empire waistline, accented by Cartier jewelry and Jimmy Choo shoes and purse, absolutely exquisite!

The Best dressed ladies of the Oscar's Red Carpet, were these beautiful leading ladies: Hilary Swank wore a black one shoulder strap Versace gown and Chopard hair clips, earrings and bracelet. Jennifer Garner trusted her talented stylist Rachel Zoe to dress her in a stunning ruffled strapless Oscar de la Renta gown and beautiful Van Cleef & Arpels vintage jewels. Penelope Cruz also chose a strapless gown with feathers and drape detail by Chanel Haute Couture and Chopard ruby and diamond drop earrings.

Not so glamorous in black: Kirstin Chenoweth who wore an Armani Prive' strapless gown, jewels by Tiffany & Co. and shoes by C. Louboutin; the wrapped organza makes her middle area seem bigger and bulging. Oscar winner Tilda Swinton is wearing a shapeless black-washed silk draped gown by Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, her lack of shape, makeup and hairstyle makes her the worst dressed on the Oscar's Red Carpet. Ellen Page is once again plain boring in a shapeless Jean Louis Scherrer from Decades gown; I like her vintage bag by Judith Leiber and long necklace by Fred Leighton. I realize that she has simple taste, however, this is the biggest movie award ceremony worldwide...it deserves a bit more reverence from the movie star!

Renee Zellweger shows her gorgeous gams in this high slit silver strapless (hand embroidered) lace gown by Carolina Herrera and Cartier Jewelry, this gown is a bit "last season", nevertheless she looks beautiful. Cameron Diaz is "pretty in blush-pink" taffeta custom made Dior gown by John Galliano, and small Bulgari jewelry. Keri Russell is beautiful in the champagne organza strapless gown by Nina Ricci and long necklace by H.Stern and Sergio Rossi shoes.

These gowns were not among my favourites: beautiful Amy Adams looks washed out in a dark green strapless gown by Proenza Schuler, and very dated by the gold fringed art deco purse accent; the H. Stern jewelry and Chopard cuff are beautiful though. Amy Ryan is also washed out by the navy blue one-shoulder gown by Calvin Klein, she could have benefitted by some colored accessories or a red lip; beautiful H. Stern diamonds and Chopard cuff. French movie star Marion Cotillard opted for a daring Jean Paul Gautier 'scaly' gown, Chopard jewelry and Sergio Rossi shoes; this mermaid inspired look, completed by the long side hairdo, makes the french actress look like "a fish out of water" in the sea of old Hollywood glamour.

The oddest couple on the red carpet is two times Oscar winner/super talented Daniel Day-Lewis and his lovely wife Rebecca Miller. His one button tuxedo and brown detail on the collar is dressed down by his brown suede boots, and his wife very adorned lace dress is also over the top, especially paired with the zebra striped heels.

The most stylish couples on the Oscar's Red Carpet were: Johnny Depp and companion Vanessa Paradis, George Clooney and Sarah Larson and Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart. Talented and stylish Johnny Depp is wearing a black custom tuxedo by Giorgio Armani and custom shirt by Anto Beverly Hills, while Vanessa Paradis is super chic in a black silk crepe Chanel Haute Couture gown, Chanel Fine jewelry "Camelia" necklace in 18K white gold and diamonds, and Chanel makeup. Heart-throb George Clooney wears a black one button, shawl collar tuxedo, while girlfriend Sarah Larson is in a beautiful Valentino Couture strapless gown. Harrison Ford is in an Arnold Brant one button tuxedo and girlfriend Calista Flockhart is wearing a delicate babyblue vintage Valentino and Sergio Rossi shoes.

Also very stylish pairs on the Oscar's Red Carpet were Colin Farrell in Dunhill midnight blue double breasted suit and the best accessory of the night: his gorgeous mother Rita!

Both Patrick Dempsey and his wife Jillian Fink Dempsey were very elegant in Versace at this year's Oscar's.
John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston were not less stylish in black tuxedo and orange Roberto Cavalli gown and Schwartz jewelry.

Very stylish men on the red carpet: Spanish movie star and oscar winner Javier Bardem wore a stylish 4 button navy tuxedo, and navy silk tie both by Prada. Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs wore a black vested tuxedo which was a mix of his label Sean Jean and Dolce & Gabbana. And finally, the very talented Viggo Mortensen was so elegant in a long jacket black custom made tuxedo by David Robinson and striped black and grey tie, and a touch of color: the red rose! One of the fashion-statement men at the Oscar's this year! So nice to see celebrities take a leap of Faith sometimes when it comes to fashion, Viggo Mortensen sure stands out in the sea of fitted black and white tuxedos.

Guide to Celebrities Casual Style for Men 2

As a part Two of the guide on men dressing Casual by taking inspiration from Celebrities, I will cover a guide to a polished Men's Casual look: British Style.

This men's casual look is more appropriate for a lean body type (it's also a great look for the shorter man). The two celebrities who embody this style are Orlando Bloom and Jude Law.

These dark and blond hair celebrities show that both blonds and brunets can take advantage of the stylish men 's casual look.

The "British" casual style is a very modern European look, which as the men looking very sleek and polished.

The clothes, from jeans to jackets are very refined and fitting to the body; the jeans have a straight leg and at times are even skinny fitting and don't show much sandblasting and distress. Both Orlando Bloom and Jude Law wear these kind of pants.

The shirts and sweaters Orlando Bloom and Jude Law choose are thin (in fabric weight) and close to the body, and usually layered under a jacket. The colors are usually somber (blacks, greys, dark brown), with few accents.

Orlando Bloom and Jude Law's necks are usually covered, either by a raised collar or a scarf.

The skinny scarf is a "must" accessory for this look, and needs to be worn wrapped or tied around the neck with both ends in the front.

The shoes show a bit of distress at times but they are not as grungy looking as the "Urban Cowboy" look.

This stylish men casual look can also be carried onto a special occasion (like the Red Carpet) by substituting a skinny tie for the scarf, and a pair of dressy straight leg pants to the jeans. Dressy vests are also chic and a great layer to the look.

Hats are not always necessary, but if chosen they too need to be fitting (head hugging). The "Casual British" man is also neatly groomed, with either a short goatee or no facial hair, and the hair is short at the back of the head and longer on top and is always sculpted up with gel and sleeked by pomade. To finish the casual look, Aviator (or Ray Ban's) sunglasses are a must!

Guide to Celebrities Casual Style for Men

Beside looking sharp and elegant at the office, men also want to be young looking, hip and up-to-date in their casual style. Most admired male celebrities have a certain signature grungy casual look, which is so fresh and effortless; so how do you get the perfect celebrity inspired men's casual look?

Easy, draw tips from their style!

I make it my job to study what styles make celebrities look so good and imitated. Celebrities have to be up to date with the latest fashion all the time, because they are constantly under a Paparazzo lens and public scrutiny. Remember, it's not about transforming into a celebrity look-alike, it's about studying the concepts beyond the style and adapting them to the individual and his everyday lifestyle.

I will recommend a couple of men's casual styles: one directed to guys with darker hair and medium to large build (in muscles and height) and one for the blonder counterpart. For the leaner or shorter body type check Part 2 of the guide.

For the dark hair casual men's look I have studied two celebrities who are adored by the ladies, are also fashion icons, and share the same fashion sense. Both Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell in their casual style are the Modern Urban Cowboys and they rock the ladies world!! Here is the guide to their casual styles:

The basic item of their look and the hottest piecein their wardrobe is the Jeans: look for a pair of not-too-large, relaxed-fit jeans in a darker wash; they need to be worn-looking, distressed (Sandblasted) and at times even a bit frayed. Careful: the jeans are not dirty, but dirty-looking -they sell them that way- so they are new and clean jeans; try not to wear a "homemade" version, as it makes the difference between looking hip or sloppy!

Both Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell wear button up fitted shirts with interesting details and embroidery (for long sleeves, roll them up 3 times max); Johnny Depp prefers his button up shirts over a T-shirt (usually a white cotton shirt or undershirt), while Colin Farrell tends to leave them 3/4 open on a bare chest (careful: no chest hair for this look). Both men, occasionally, wear a vest and long sleeves shirts tied around the waist.

The base concept of this men's casual style is Layering, from shirts to jewelry; most men look great and well put together by layering their clothes (caution: keep fabric light, not to add to much bulk). To layer jewelry, remember to go with an odd number of pieces (either one or three, or five) as odd numbers are more pleasing to the eye. Keep the pieces interesting with different lengths and texture; leather and pewter/matte silver jewelry is sophisticated and well fitted for a casual modern man, while big gold chains scream more "Soprano's" style!

Big cuff leather bracelets are also very hip now, and give the image of a tough bad boy (which most women love!). The cuff could be balanced with a softer look on the other arm, which is left either bare or with a few smaller leather bracelets with a couple of beads.

Let's not forget the hats, from woolen caps to fedora hats, both Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell love to complete their casual look by covering their lustrous hair with a hat (avoid Baseball caps for the grungy casual style). Scuffed shoes and short boots are also in these Hollywood Stars casual wardrobe, which add style to the grungy look. Both actors sport a well groomed 5 O'clock shadow on their jaws, leaving the hair darker and longer around their mouths (Goatee style), so invest in a trimmer. I would suggest this casual look to a darker hair guy because of the beard (on a blond guy, it would have to be longer to be seen and could end up looking disheveled), also other items of the Rocker Edge Style would suits a darker haired guy better (generally speaking): the layered leather and beads might end up having the opposite results on a lighter hair guy (looking more"surfer dude-ish" like).

For the Lighter Hair man (with also medium to large built), follow the more tamed stylish men's casual/grungy look of celebrities: Brad Pitt and David Beckham (who are also great fashion icons in Hollywood and adored by women all over the world).

Both Brad Pitt and David Beckham love their hats, Brad wears mostly the Sicilian "coppola" and David woolen and military caps.

They too wear relaxed fit distressed jeans, with a looser fit, and are often seen with their stylish big brown sunglasses (a must for blond dudes). Both celebrities also love their fitted T-shirts, sweaters and the layered look.

Neither Brad Pitt nor David Beckham, wear a lot of jewelry or embellishments, but love their wide scarves and fitted jackets for the winter look. The accessories these stylish men indulge in are leather belts, messenger bags and scuffed dark shoes.

For both Dark and Light hair men: keep hair well groomed: shorter at the back and longer on the top of the head, use some pomade or styling gel to hold it in place and neat looking. If you are looking for a change in your casual style, but are not sure if you can sport a similar look, change one item at a time, like the jewelry, or the layering, and learn to get good at it (caution: you might not love the change right away if you go for something big, like the shoes, start with something smaller and easier on the eye). These celebrities also add to the 'bad boy' image with their charm, loud motorbikes, fast sports cars and many times, even Tatoos (in Johnny Depp and David Beckham case), but at the same time they are not afraid to show thier softer side (especially around their children).

Grammy Awards 2008- Red Carpet Glam

The 50th Annual Grammy Awards wrapped up last night, February 10, leaving us some of the best and worse fashion of the Red Carpet. This year we can clearly see a return to old Hollywood glamour, with a twist!

On the Ladies of the red carpet we saw a lot of jewel toned gowns, sculpted hairdos, minimal jewelry and soft, natural makeup. The guys, also kept it elegant, but we saw a bit more rock edge to their look, which is very appropriate for the Grammy's. They sported sleek hairdos, hats and sunglasses (at times even funky gadgets).
The ladies' fashion for the Red Carpet left me a bit disappointed, with the exception of a few, who had the best Red Carpet Grammy's Rock and Roll look. Rihanna wore a ruffled, feathered cobalt blue dress by Zac Posen, delicate Chopard jewels (like her 27-carat diamond barrel cuff) and a new rocking short hairdo, such a great Grammy style. The look got pushed a bit over the edge, however, by her tacky long red nails...a shorter version would have been more Rock and Roll!

Also Grammy appropriate, classy and elegant presenter Roselyn Sanchez, wore an adorable cut, print and length dress.

Carrie Underwood wore a pretty plunging Zuhair Murad gown (just off the runway) and Mary Norton Clutch. I liked the lovely cut on her tiny figure and even though I'm not crazy about the busy floral pattern, it wasn't a super glamorous Oscar look...which made it more Grammy worthy.
The rest of the girls' gowns, long trains and serious fabrics lacked the Rock and Roll edge and looked more appripriate for a glamorous Oscar's Red Carpet than the fun edgy Grammy Awards. And the hairstyles were no prize winners either, having too much of an edge to them, the hairdos were extremely mismatched to the glamorous "ball"gowns.

Alicia Keys wore a long, midnight-blue satin, custom Giorgio Armani Prive' chocker-neckline gown, a long train, Diamond in the Rough earrings, a tiny pink clutch and magenta lipstick. I didn't really love her retro-40's rooster/mohawk inspired updo, and I found her gown more appropriate for an Oscar night.

Fantasia also, too overdressed for the Grammy's, in her long wrinkled black gown and train (accented by a beautiful H.Stern cuff); her hair style, also not a good match to the glamour of the dress: half of her head has a shaved blond cut and the rest has black curls...looked like a mop more than a rocker's hair!

The stunning country singer Faith Hill was so beautiful in her one-shoulder black Valentino gown, her exquisit Lorraine Schwartz jewelry (love the hint of red in her earrings), and her coiffed updo, that made her absolutely breathtaking! However, even her style looked a bit too sophisticated for the edgy Grammy Music Awards! She would have been Jaw-dropping at the Oscar's in this dress!

Nelly Furtado: an absolute disaster; from the gown to the hairdo, to the jewelry, she is a Red Carpet Don't!!! She chose a very drapy bright blue Arthur Mendoza gown which got extremely overpowered by a very sleek back blond bob and the big jewelry around her face (let's not even discuss her tan). She would have been better off wearing a big cuff bracelet than that gold coil snake like choker. Just too much!

Fun-loving and music legend Cindy Lauper was absolutely gorgeous and delicate in her vintage black lacy bust long dress, a bit too dressy for the Grammy's again, and also very mismatched by the long tacky leather gloves (looked like a mad scientist!).

Beyonce's new shoulder length highlighted hair looked fresh and modern, especially with her soft curls and delicate make up. The gown however, was a bit too much. Beyonce wore a pale blue tulle and silver beaded Elie Saab haute couture gown and beautiful Lorraine Schwartz diamond caviar cuff (worth half a million). The style of the dress is very appropriate for the Grammy Awards, however, the over the top bedazzling made it very "show girl" like. It would have been more appropriate for one of her stage appearances.

Fergie stood out in the sea of "blue and black gowns" in a pale yellow Calvin Klein sheath, Cartier diamonds and metallic clutch and sandals. I found her deep decolletage a bit much for her large chest and even though she looked delicate and pretty, she wasn't edgy enough for the Music Awards. Sometimes being too safe can be just... plain boring.

Miley Cyrus (A.k.a. Hannah Montana) wore a white sequined Celine short dress and Sergio Rossi heels and clutch. The teenager was age appropriate and edgy in this shiny shorter dress but her makeup is just too severe for her pretty face (especially around her eyes).

Bai Ling: a total mess! The naughty school girl dress reminds me of a poker table upholstery (chips and cards included), and what's on both her shins?? Band-aids? Let's not even talk about her eye makeup. Just too edgy and theatrical, for any Red Carpet!

The Best Dressed Band: Paramore; the new group was very Grammy appropriate and matched each other. I love how they all kept the look edgy, modern and age appropriate, from their hair to their clothes. It's so Rock and Roll to mix fancy jackets and ties with jeans or a delicate dress with an edgy color hair and knee high socks. The band scores big points when it comes to fashion!

Did I miss the Memo for the hem line on the jacket sleeves?? Don't they appear awfully short?
Especially on fancy and expensive Armani's suits??

Both Ludacris and John Legend wore Giorgio Armani head to toe. and They looked very sharp, except for the short jacket sleeves!! John Legend wore a white tab shirt white hanky and a black velvet vest with his black suit; love the contrast in fabric weight. While Ludacris also looks sharp with a black shirt and white tie and hanky. The sunglasses and "ices" on both ear lobes give the classy suit a Grammy edge.

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli gave an amazing performance at the Grammy Award ceremony (together with the talented Josh Grohan) to give tribute to Luciano Pavarotti, who recently passed away. He looked very edgy and modern in his Grammy outfit and also very Red Carpet worthy.

Jay-Z also looked sharp in his blue pin striped Tom Ford tuxedo which he wore with his signature bow tie. Even though his accessorizing was minimal, the fabric of the outfit gave it an edgy style.

Young Chris Brown wore a suit which he designed himself. I like the shirt collar on him and the two toned suit, however, I would have kept the jacket in a solid white color, with the red anky as accessory and color accent. The red trims around the jacket collar and the sleeves are just too much. Nevertheless it is an edgy and original look which makes the musician stand out in the see of black tuxes and designer suits.

The band members of Daughtry are their usual sharp-looking selves but this time I find the band very mis-matched. There is everything: from leather to ruffled shirt to a three piece suit, and the hair goes from bald, to mohawk, to bob. It's always better that band members get together before deciding their Red Carpet look to keep a more omogeneous "story line" to their style.

Red Carpet Worthy are Ne-Yo wearing a sharp Ferragamo dark grey suit, black shirt and tie, a brown Fedora and shiny black tuxedo shoes. Also Akon who paired Lee jeans and Prada shoes and belt, topped by a black trench coat with a big fur collar and trim.
